I was fast.



I was still staring at dad horrified. He couldn’t mean that, he just couldn’t. But I was afraid he was totally serious this time, he wasn’t playing with me anymore. Dad had given two choices to me. I could tell the truth with my own words or dad would use magic to get the truth out of me. Both of them didn’t feel a right option.
- Well, have you already decided? dad broke the silence.
- Why are you doing this to me? Why don’t you trust me that everything is okay? I asked sadly.
- Don’t change the subject! I want to know because I smell you’ve done something wrong since you’re trying to keep it as a secret so badly, dad snapped.
I didn’t answer to him anymore. It seemed my back was against a wall right now. I didn’t have any way to escape.
- If you aren’t going to answer, you know very well what I need to do, dad threatened.
I didn’t say a word, it was useless. Dad would know everything no matter what I did. If I tried to lie to him, he would notice it.
- Alright. So this was your choice, he whispered and mumbled some words.
I could feel how something grew inside me. It forced my mouth to open and formed phonemes, words, sentences and a story. And I couldn’t do anything else than be there and follow how my mouth was living its own separated life. I didn’t have guts to see how my story would affect dad. So I closed my eyes and listened to my voice echoing in my ears. My voice told how I had talked with a human, how I was afraid someone would know about it, how I didn’t want to patrol in the forest because I didn’t want to crash into that woman again… Soon I realized my mouth had stopped speaking and I could use it on my own. I looked at dad scarily. He was staring his table. I don’t know what he was thinking and I guess I even didn’t want to know about it. Finally dad lifted his eyes from the table and looked straight to my eyes.
- So… You broke the most important rule just like that, he snapped his fingers.
He shook his head. – I thought I raised you well enough that you would have realized how wrong it is… dad sighed.
- I only wanted…
- QUIET! I’m talking now. I don’t know if everything was differently if mom was still alive. Maybe you would’ve understood everything better, dad sighed and stared the table again.
- Is that so wrong to talk with human? I asked surprised.
- It is… You obviously don’t know how bad crime it is.
- How could I have known because you’ve never told me?! I have asked you many times to tell me about humans and why we aren’t allowed to talk with them, I complained.
- It’s only because the information is secret. Only king can know that and when you would’ve been the king, I would’ve told you about it. But now everything has changed. I don’t know what I should do. I’m afraid I have to think about this more and I have to ask you not to leave the palace before I’ve talked with you, he said.
I nodded and left him alone. Now I was really scared. I had barely understood what dad had explained. I guess he was so shocked he was talking nonsense. I had a bad feeling inside me that things weren’t right way anymore. Dad had looked so sad and worried. That’s why I was nervous and afraid.

Since I wasn’t allowed to leave the palace I decided to spend my time in the library. I could use my time usefully and continue reading the books. Maybe I could get a hint what dad was talking about.

I was interrupted by Inaila when she ran into library like a hurricane.
- What the hell you’ve done? she yelled in the middle of the room.
I lifted my eyes from an old dusty book and stared at her calmly.
- You obviously have talked with dad?
- Yes, I saw him and we had a little chat about you because Hathiere told me you aren’t taking care of yourself. And then dad told me what you had done! Are you a total idiot or what?
- Obviously you know that better than me, I said and started to read the book again.
- Do you even realize what you’ve done to us? Dad is talking about some cruel punishment but it was all I could understand, Inaila continued yelling.
- I don’t know because dad never told us what the punishment will be if we talk with people. That’s why I’m reading these books. If I could find the information here…
- So you just decided to try and see what kind of punishment it would be, Inaila snapped.
- Of course not! I’m just curious to know why so many people are walking around our land. I should’ve talked more with them, I thought out loud.
- Idiot! Hopefully you won’t do anything stupid anymore. Dad will explode thousands of pieces if he has to deal with even one more problem, Inaila warned.
- Don’t worry sister. I’m not allowed to go anywhere so I guess I’ll stay here, I answered.
- But I’m curious to know what you’ve been doing during these days. You’ve been so quiet about it.
- Yeah. I’ll tell later, I need to go now, she answered quickly and almost ran out of the room.
I looked after her and shook my head. If she was spending time with Nyshere… It didn’t mean anything else than they had a man or men in sight. That was only good for Inaila, she would’ve something else to think about than problems I had caused.

It took days before dad wanted to talk with me. Before that I was spending my time in the library. I asked a servant to take my lunch and dinner there. I slept only in my room, otherwise I was in the library. Hathiere came to see me a few times but I didn’t want to tell him why I wasn’t allowed to leave the palace.

When dad entered in the room I saw from his face he didn’t have nice news. The role had switched. Now he was looking bad with pale face and bloodshot eyes. I put my book aside and waited dad would sit near the fireplace where I was sitting.
- I’ve spent all this time thinking what I should do with you, he started, and I’ve talked with my advisors and I’m afraid I don’t have any other choice than do like our law says, he lowered his voice in the end.
- And what our law says then? I asked carefully.
- This whole thing is going to change so many things. Everybody else will know things they usually won’t know. The knowledge is only for kings, dad said silently.
- You didn’t answer to my question, I said quietly.
- All elves who talk with people have to deport.
- Deport to where?
- Outside the land, dad answered with painful voice.
- What?! You can’t be serious! I yelled.
- That’s one thing what our law orders, dad sighed.
- So there’s something more? I asked afraid.
- You’re right. All the deportees will lose their ability to use magic, dad explained.
- What?! I was repeating myself. – How is that possible?
- Only the kings know a magic trick which closes the victim out of magic, forever, he whispered the last word.
- WHAT?!?! No hell, you can’t do this to me. YOU CAN’T! I’m your son, I was supposed to be a king one day. You can’t deport me somewhere out of this land and take my magic skills, I yelled like a mad and threw everything I got to my hands.
A big book flew straight towards dad. A vase fell to pieces when I threw it against a wall. A plate, a glass and a pitcher flew after the vase.
- ATHA’N! Calm down for God’s sake! dad yelled.
I stopped because suddenly I realized that raging like that didn’t help me at all.
- Don’t you realize that this hurts me too? dad said silently. – I’m losing my own son, my land won’t have a king…
- So you’re thinking only yourself? What about me? I won’t have any place to go. If you take my magic skills away I can’t go to any elf land. Don’t you realize that I can die there? I asked madly.
- I know. But nobody has ever done this before so I really don’t know how this will affect you, dad explained.
- Just leave me alone now… I want to be alone, I asked and buried my face to my hands.
I heard how dad stood up and careful steps came beside me and I felt how dad put his hand on my shoulder. I let it be there. I understood this wasn’t dad’s fault. He was doing everything like the laws ordered. I was the only one who was guilty to this huge mess.

I didn’t sleep a lot during the night. I stared the ceiling above me and tried to think what this really meant. First of all, I would lose my magic skills. I couldn’t enter in the elf lands anymore. Then I would be all alone there. Like dad said, this land would be without a king then. I don’t know how dad was going to solve it. Maybe it was time to have the first queen here. The whole situation felt like a nightmare. My brain couldn’t understand these happenings at all. I couldn’t believe dad was doing this to me, to his own son. He was observing the law too closely. I couldn’t understand why he had to be so damn honest. Why couldn’t he be quiet about this and forget it? It would be the easiest way to all of us. I didn’t have any idea what I was supposed to do. What I was going to do there outside all lands not capable to handle magic at all. Every thought from running away to killing me right now went through my mind. But I couldn’t do anything like that. I was too honest, like my dad. I guess I just had to face the truth, I had screwed up everything. I had to face all the bad results of my mistakes. The only way to survive was to be calm. I couldn’t lose my temper anymore like I had done when dad told me my miserable future. I was afraid I couldn’t face my relatives or friends anymore. This situation was too embarrassing. The prince of the land breaks the most important law in this land. Every little elf knew it was forbidden to talk with people. I was really good example for all. I was totally lost now. I really didn’t know what was going to happen in the future. It all depended on dad.

When the sun gave its first beams over the land I finally fell asleep seeing dreams and nightmares about sending me away.

I've been reading this story without registering for a while and finally I had to register so that I'll be able to leave comments!
So... I think Heli has done this story very interesting, not only because it's a fantasy, but because of the selection of the music. I usually first click the link and start to listen to the song and then start reading the part and in the end I've always noticed how well the music fits into this story! Then it's like I could see everything happening in my mind, like it was a movie! Yes, it is like I was watching a movie! In my mind! So, I'm really curious to know how this story continues and ends and also to hear the music what's chosen for each part

But I have to say this, I picked the songs because of their names not because of melodies. So it's quite cool that they still fit so well to each part..

I was tired on the next day. I hadn’t slept much during the night, only seen nightmares about the situation. I didn’t leave my room at all, I wanted to be alone. Dad came to see me in the afternoon but he didn’t have any new news. He was still keeping his decision to send me away. He asked if I wanted to tell Inaila about this but I didn’t want. Dad could tell her. I didn’t want to see anyone. I was hoping everybody would leave me alone.

The servants brought food for me to my room. Sometimes I ate it, sometimes I didn’t. I was totally out of this situation. I couldn’t still understand it. It felt like I would have been living in a dream. That this wasn’t happening to me, the victim wasn’t me but someone else. But I was afraid I wouldn’t wake up and notice it all was only a dream. No, it was a nightmare I couldn’t wake up from.

A few days later Inaila stepped into my room. This time she wasn’t yelling at me. I saw she knew everything. So dad had told her about my situation. It was weird that Inaila wasn’t shouting to me. She had been doing that so much lately that t was strange to listen to her speaking normally.
- Dad told me everything, she said silently. – Why?
- I don’t know. I’ve asked it many times from myself and I still don’t know, I answered. – You can always blame my curiosity…
- You were curious as a child already, Inaila smiled sadly. – You’ve changed everything here now.
- Don’t you think I haven’t realized it? I would do everything to undo it but I can’t… I sighed.
- I know, Inaila whispered.
She sat down next to me on my bed and hugged me tight.
- I just don’t want to lose my only brother, she said quietly to my shoulder.
- And I wouldn’t like to lose everything I have here. I can’t understand how dad stands this. How can he be so cruel and send me away? I thought out loud.
- I don’t have any other choice I’m afraid, I heard dad saying from the door.
I hadn’t heard him coming in. Inaila let me go and nailed her look to dad.
- You should have some choice. You’re the king for God’s sake! Inaila yelled.
- Yes, I’m the king and that’s why I need to follow the laws more closely than others. What would they say if they knew the king had broken a law? he said seriously.
- So it really doesn’t matter even you’re going to send your own son away? You don’t even know what happens then, Inaila argued.
- Of course it matters! I’ve tried to find any other way to handle this situation but I can’t find any!
- How about an amnesty? Inaila continued.
- You know very well that I don’t have a right to do that, dad said.
Inaila was going to say something more but I stopped her.
- Stop it. Dad has made his decision already. He won’t and he can’t change it anymore, I sighed.
- Atha’n! You can’t give up now! You must fight! Inaila shouted.
I shook my head.
- No. Fighting doesn’t help. I made a mistake, I broke the law. I must suffer all the consequences, I said quietly.
- No! You can’t give up now!
- Do I have any other choice?
That got Inaila to shut up her mouth. She knew as well as I did that I couldn’t do anything anymore. I had to stand this situation now, I didn’t have any other choice.
- But you can always fight, Inaila whispered and stared at her hands.
- I could but it wouldn’t help my situation, I said.
- Inaila, Atha’n is right. He can’t do anything anymore. Only thing he can do is to accept the situation, dad said. – You two must understand that I tried to do everything I could to save Atha’n. This time it wasn’t enough and I’ll blame myself forever that I had to do this, dad continued.
- When are you going to do it? I forced myself to ask.
- I don’t know yet. You’ll be the first one who is going to know it of course, dad answered. – I must do some arrangements before that.
- Alright. Please, could you leave me alone now? I asked politely.
- But it wouldn’t be wise you to be alone now, Inaila started.
- I know when I need company, I interrupted her.
- Fine. I’ll say to Hathiere that he should come here to talk with you, Inaila said even so.
- Right, I sighed.
- How many knows about this by the way? I asked right before dad was leaving.
- We three, nobody else.
- So I need to tell Hathiere about this mess, I muttered.
- And Ekhinai´ and Thereial are also interested in why you haven’t been out lately, Inaila said before she left.
- And you have still couple of days time to tell me what you’ve been doing! I yelled after her.

I didn’t want to see my friends. I was still too embarrassed about what I had done. But I had to be honest to my friends and tell them the truth.
I hoped all this would be already over…

It was horrible to tell everything to Hathiere, Thereial and Ekhinai’. We four had been friends since we were kids. “All for one and one for all” was our motto. But now they couldn’t do anything for me. Hathiere understood immediately that this was the reason why I had acted so weirdly. Thereial and Ekhinai’ were a bit out of everything that had happened lately. So I had to give a longer explanation for them.
- I guess I haven’t been a good friend lately because I haven’t noticed anything like that, Thereial shook his head.
- It’s okay. You have your own lives too, I said. – I don’t know how you are either nowadays.
- Well, well, Thereial. You should tell everything now, Ekhinai’ was teasing him.
- What? Now? Ermm… he muttered and blushed.
- What? You made me curious now. Tell me, I said.
- Thereial had a crush on one girl, Ekhinai’ revealed and laughed teasingly.
- Really? Who’s that girl? I asked curious. – Do I know her?
- You know her really well, Ekhinai’ grinned.
- Hey, hey, hey, wait a minute. Thereial, are you in love with my sister? I asked surprised.
- Well…yes, he answered silently and blushed again.

- Well, you said Inaila has spent time with Nyshere. And if they two are together it can’t mean anything else than other or both of them have a crush on somebody, I explained. – And she has avoided talking about why she is out so much. I just added one plus one and got two.
- So, Inaila has a crush on ME? Thereial stared at me.
- Obviously yes. You two should really talk, I laughed.
- So you don’t have anything against that…that I would start dating her? Thereial asked carefully.
- Of course not, I rolled my eyes. – I’ll be deported soon so it’s all the same for me what you’re doing, I said quietly.
- Oh, well…yes…uhm…I didn’t think…sorry, Thereial was stuttering.
- Hey mate, don’t worry. It’s okay, I calmed him.
- And if you’re going to stutter so badly with Inaila, you’ll make a total fool of yourself, Ekhinai’ teased Thereial.
- Stop it now Ekhinai’! Can’t you see how he believes everything you’re saying to him! Hathiere told.
- Thereial, just be you own good yourself with Inaila. That’s enough, I said to him.
This was our normal situation, Ekhinai’ was teasing Thereial because he was so shy and quiet and a bit unsure about himself. I and Hathiere tried to balance between them.

I couldn’t exactly understand how Inaila had ended up to Thereial. They were so different and I was afraid Thereial would be totally under Inaila’s thumb. But that wasn’t my problem at all.
- Do you have any idea when you dad is going to do that…? Hathiere asked finally.
He was obviously trying to avoid the exact word.
- Dad hasn’t told it yet. But he promised to tell me first than anyone else. So, I’ll let you know as soon as I know it, I promised.
- Do you know what happens when you’re out there without…without any magic skills? Ekhinai’ asked seriously.
I knew they all were worried about me, even Ekhinai’ was serious now.
- I don’t have any idea. I’m the first one who will be deported and closed from magic, I answered.
Guys got shock during every word which they had avoided.
- You entered in historical books now. Something good in this situation at least, Ekhinai’ was trying to joke.
But this thing was too serious that he could have joked around this.
- But how can you live there if you can’t go to any elf lands? Thereial opened his mouth finally.
- I’ve to survive without them, I said shortly. – Maybe I should go and live with humans in their city.
All three looked at me terrified.
- Hey, that was a joke! I don’t want to see any human anymore. The one caused me so much trouble already, I rolled my eyes.

When guys finally left I sighed long and deep. That had asked more power than I had believed. I was glad they hadn’t actually blamed me but I could see they really didn’t understand why I had done it. I guess nobody really understood it. Sometimes I couldn’t understand it either. But they really knew what would happen when I would be deported to the forest… That’s why they were so worried about me. Actually it was good if Inaila concentrated on Thereial now. The fact I had been deported would be easier to handle if Thereial would be with her. And I trusted to Thereial. He would be a good husband to Inaila.
