5. Ruska

A couple of days later I was wandering in the forest. I went slowly nearer and nearer to the boundary. I wanted to know if it really was true, that the humans were moving there more often. I enjoyed the peace of the nature, birds were still singing even it was autumn already. Trees had some orange leaves already, mushrooms were spread on the ground, lingonberries were already red… But the peace was disturbed pretty soon. I could hear how someone or some people were walking so loudly somewhere in front of me. It couldn’t be anyone else than a human. Soon after that I saw him. He was luckily going back to his own world otherwise I would have had to take care of him. I walked past him without he even noticed me. Blind. The nearer I got to the boundary the more I saw people. As if there was a rush hour going on.

But then…I saw a familiar face there. It was the same woman who I had forced to go back already once. But this time she was alone, walking deeper and deeper to the forest. Didn’t she learn anything yet? I sighed and left to follow her. She was collecting mushrooms obviously. She had a basket with her where were already a few ones. There was nothing bad in her behaviour if she only had been in her own world. I don’t know why I started to act like that but suddenly I noticed I had rushed past her. My hair was partly open so it covered my ears. Then I leaned against a tree and waited when she would notice me. At the same time a voice was shouting like a mad in my head. “You stupid asshole! What the hell are you doing right now?!? If dad knew about this, he would castrate you!” I didn’t let the voice disturb be. I had already made my decision, the other thing was if it was right or wrong. I had time to even think that the woman was blind before she really noticed me. She looked at me long, I knew I looked weird with my being and clothes.

- Why are you staring at me? she asked carefully.
- I don’t have any particular reason for that, I spelled slowly.
- You aren’t from here? she asked next.
- No, I’m not, I answered and shook my head.
- Oh, that I was thinking. You’re speaking with funny accent, she laughed nervously.
I could feel she was unsure about this whole thing. She was glancing around, obviously trying to find other people. But that was in vain. I had made a little bubble around us. She could see only an empty forest but I could see other people so I could cancel the magic safely. Also others couldn’t hear what we were talking so this was the safest way to talk with a human. Other elves needed really much time to catch this bubble so I could say it was a hundred per cent safe.
- You don’t need to be scared, I’m not going to harm you, I said with calm voice.
- I’m not scared, woman answered and got a bit shocked.
- Of course you aren’t, I rolled my eyes. – If I had wanted to do something to you, I could have done it already an hour ago, I sighed.
Now I could see she was really frightened.
- I just wanted to chat a bit, nothing more. And besides, this place has started to be a bit unstable so I could escort you to safer place, I suggested.
Finally she nodded but she was still walking about two metres away of me. Luckily the bubble forced her to be near me, she couldn’t run away.
- I just want to know why you all have started to spend so much time around this forest, I started after a silent moment.
- Who we? Do you mean me and my friend or all from our city or what? she asked.
- Well…all from your city.
- This is pure nature which we don’t have in the town, we can have game, berries and mushrooms from here…why? she answered.
- This place isn’t safe for you. If you go too deep to the forest, you won’t find back ever, I shook my head sadly.
- There are rumours about this forest in the town. Some of us had disappeared there, she said suddenly.
- Yes, I know that…
A memory of drifting people deep in the forest appeared to my head…
- But why are you talking about “us”? Shouldn’t you belong to it too? she asked.
- No because I don’t live in your city, I answered carefully.
- Who are you then? Or what…? she asked more frightened.
- It really doesn’t matter who or what I really am. The main thing is that you’re in danger in this forest. But I guess you can find your way back home from here, right? I can’t come any further, I said.
She was still staring at me, I could feel how she was trying to think who I really was.
- Mene, I whispered and she turned her back to me and started to walk away.
I made sure she would walk safely back to town and cleaned her memory as well. I couldn’t help letting a tiny memory of me inside of her head. She would have something to think for the next days.

I had been collecting mushrooms in the forest. Now I was walking back home already. Something was disturbing in my head, like something strange would have happened there. But I couldn’t remember anything, it felt like I had talked with someone. When I opened the gate to my garden the weird feeling disappeared. So what if I had talked with someone? Who cares? Suddenly the rocks in front of me formed a sentence “Forest isn’t a safe place”. When I blinked my eyes once, there was a normal path to my door. Whaaaaat? Brown eyes and blonde hair flashed in my head for a moment.

6. Fatal error

When she was finally gone, I sighed deep. At the same time all power vanished from my feet and I had to lean against a tree. I sat down on the ground still leaning my back against the tree. I had made the most stupid thing ever. I had broken the most important rule: Do not ever, EVER talk with humans. And what had I just done? I forced a human to speak with me. Oh, God, what if someone saw us? I had never asked what happens if someone talks with them. But I knew the punishment wouldn’t be a small one even if I happened to be a prince. I couldn’t ask about it now since dad had already suspected I would do that. And I thought I wouldn’t…but did it even so.

When I finally felt that I could stand and walk back home I left. While I was walking along the streets I felt like everybody would have known I had made something illegal. Every look towards me made me feel so bad… If this was going to feel like this how could I face dad or Inaila after this? I couldn’t avoid them forever. It would have been easier if I had been able to tell about this to someone. But it wasn’t possible of course. And then, what if someone really saw us? It would be a disaster for me! Did I think at all before acting? No, of course not… I had acted so impulsive that I had time to think only afterwards. And talking with the woman hadn’t helped at all. I still didn’t know why they were spending time here so much. This was so great…

I went straight to my room when I finally got to palace. I wanted to be alone for a while before I should go to see dad. He had asked, no ordered, me to think some solution for this problem. Had I thought it? Nope. Soon I heard a knocking on my door. I knew a servant was there, ready to take me to dad’s office. And I was right. While walking after the servant I couldn’t help thinking why dad had to do some things by law, for instance this. A servant was ordered to take me there even I knew pretty well where dad’s office was. But otherwise I could walk around the palace on my own. I didn’t need any servants to take me somewhere. My thoughts were interrupted when I almost bumped into the servant. We were there, standing in front of the door of dad’s office.

The servant knocked on the door and opened it immediately after it and let me in. If dad was going to do everything in the right way, I could play this game easily. I walked peacefully in front of dad, bowed a little and waited the servant would offer a chair to me. Then I sat down and waited quietly that the servant would be away.
- You’re playing a little prince now? dad asked sarcastically.
- You started this yourself when you sent the servant to take me here, I answered.
- Well, anyway, I’m glad to see you haven’t forgotten all the formal behaviour, he said.
- How could I forget that? You’ve taught them to me when I was just a little kid and tested me every now and then, I grinned.
- Oh yeah. I remember I woke you up in the middle of the night once and tested you, dad laughed. – But, he got serious then, do you have an ideas how to solve this problem with people?
The nice atmosphere had gone and I started to sweat. How could I keep all this as a secret if I felt like this already now?
- Well, if you don’t want to make more magic walls, the only way in my opinion is to put elves to guard the boundary. Of course that asks more men who you have to pay for it to but then people won’t come too close to us, I explained.
The idea was the only one I could think right now and apparently it satisfied dad.
- I’ve to admit I was thinking something like that too. As you were thinking that also, you could lead the elves who I order to take care of the boundary, dad said.
- ME?! Why me? Shouldn’t I study something here instead of walking in the forest? I asked surprised.
I didn’t want to go near the boundary at all, not after what had happened to me. But I couldn’t tell my reasons why I didn’t want to do that.
- This is a serious problem. And if you’re there, others will understand it too and they’ll take it seriously, dad gave reasons to his decision.
- I can’t say no if the king is saying so, I sighed.
- You’re right. Though I don’t understand why you don’t want to go there. Usually you’re the first one who is going there, dad wondered.
- I just thought I would have had something more important to do here but if I don’t have I can go there, I answered. Even though voices were yelling in my head I was stupid when I agreed this. I had a feeling this wasn’t going to end well.

I wasn't expecting you to do

Since I'm really bored I thought to post new part now.. And I guess I don't have much time to post anything next week because my test week starts on Tuesday

7. Worlds collide

Dad was really fast with it. Already next day he informed me about all the men who I would lead to the forest. Dad had picked up twenty men, no idea how he had done that but now I had my own “army”. Dad had decided it would be wise to patrol around the boundary every two days for the start. If it didn’t have any effects, men would start patrol every day. That would ask more men then of course. It would have been enough for me if I had been with them once to show some kind of example for them. But no, I had to be with every patrol turn no matter what. This whole thing was going to be totally insane. I didn’t want to be in the forest with men I barely knew. I had to figure out something wiser to do. I couldn’t understand why Inaila couldn’t do this kind of things too. She was a princess as surely as I was a prince. It would be fair if she had to do something for this land also. But wait…I hadn’t seen her for a long time. And that meant a day or two. Usually she was following my doings very closely. Now I didn’t even know what she thought about this patrolling in the forest. Obviously she had something better to do.

Next morning I met dad and my twenty men in the garden. The sun had barely risen, I couldn’t understand why we had to be there so early. I was surprised when I saw my men standing in the garden. I knew actually all of them. All of my best friends outside the palace were there. Dad could pull the right strings sometimes. It would be nicer to be there with friends than with totally unknown men.
- I didn’t know you were going to ask all my friends to join, I said gladly to dad.
- I thought it would cheer you up. You weren’t so excited about this so I thought it would be more comfortable with friends, dad explained.
- And you were right, once again, I smiled.
- So, boys, let’s go! I yelled and all shouted for an answer.
I lead them out of the city and stopped when we were near the boundary.
- So, you all know what to do? Dad has explained everything clear enough? I wanted to be sure.
All men were nodding their heads.
- Good. Let’s make pairs so we get ten groups of two, I ordered. – It’s better to move together, easier to take care of people and then we can be sure they’re going safely home. You all know the boundary line which is opposite the human town, that’s the area we’re patrolling. We should have enough pairs so we can keep an eye contact with pairs who are beside us. You all have a pair now? Good. So, I’m with you Hathiere?
I haven’t seen my best friend after the hunting season so it was great I could spend some time with him finally.
- Are you ready? If yes, then let’s go, I ordered.
I took the left side with Hathiere and next to us were Thereial and Ekhinai’, my friends also. When I got a chain message from the pair who was on the right side of the area that they were ready, I blew to a hunting horn. Our job had started.

We walked near the boundary and let our looks wander around. It would be easiest if we didn’t let the people to come to our land at all. They could enter in past the boundary line but we couldn’t across it. It was like a wall to us, an invisible wall. I could sense it but not see it. If I straightened my arm it stopped in the middle of movement.
- Do you want to go to the humans’ side? Hathiere asked suddenly.
He had obviously been watching me. I got a little shock and turned my look quickly to him.
- No, of course I don’t want. I was just thinking why humans can walk in our lands but we have to stay in our own land, I said.
- Does it really matter? he asked tiredly.
- Yes, it matters. If we could go to their city we could build a magic wall around it and we could make sure they won’t disturb us anymore, I said with passion.
- Ok, ok, calm down! You’re overreacting right now, Hathiere tried to calm me down.
- I’m not overreacting! It’s stupid we are prisoners of our own land.
Hathiere looked at me weirdly.
- What’s happened to you? You’re somehow changed after we met last time. Why are you envying people so much? he asked worried.
- I’m not envying them! It just isn’t fair that they can come here just like that, I lowered my voice.
- That hasn’t disturbed you before. Why now? Hathiere asked curious.
- Because we’re here now. We wouldn’t need to be here right now if people couldn’t come here, I explained.
- But usually you’ve liked to be here in the forest. What’s changed you mind? he asked.
- I haven’t changed my mind. I just don’t like to be here patrolling in the boundary, I sighed.
Luckily Hathiere didn’t go on talking and asking like that. He looked at me weirdly and left me in peace. If he had continued like that further, I would’ve been in trouble. I was bad at lying and Hathiere knew that. But obviously he wanted to be loyal to me for once, not to pressure me more.

Nothing notable happened during the week. We send people away, one day it was busier and one day not. Hathiere didn’t ask more about my strange mood but I know he knew something had happened to me. And he knew that I knew it.

Winter was coming soon, trees had still multicolour leaves: orange, yellow, red and brown… It was beautiful now but soon everything would be cold, wet and dark. It would start with raining then it would change to sheet and finally to the real snowstorm. I didn’t know how long we should be patrolling in the forest. I have to admit that it had helped. There were less people wandering around the forest. But nobody wanted to be the whole day there in winter. And I assume people wouldn’t do that either. Everything depended on dad right now. I didn’t want to be in the forest because I didn’t want to crash into that woman again. Even I knew the forest was big and there were many people in the city, I couldn’t trust to my luck not to meet the woman again.

When the weather got colder we didn’t patrol in the forest so much anymore. However I wasn’t with them anymore because dad had decided I should start studying again. And I used my free time with reading old books in our library. I made a fire to a huge fireplace there and read all books which had something to do with people. I wanted to understand why we had to live in separated worlds. I was trying to search any kind of info why we had end up with this kind of situation. Have we been living like this all the time or were we living together once? I wanted to know that so badly that I didn’t remember to eat or sleep anymore. I was only reading and reading when I had time. I knew dad couldn’t answer to my questions so there was no use to bother him with my problems.

It took a long time to notice that Inaila was spending a lot of time somewhere else outside the palace. I didn’t know what she was doing and with whom but something mysterious it was because she didn’t want to comment on her absence at all. And since Inaila was away from the palace it took a while before dad noticed something was wrong with me. He had so many things to do that he hadn’t time to be with me except the lessons he kept me. I was always there on time and played everything was alright. Hathiere was the first one who noticed my bad condition. I was walking in the garden. I hadn’t been out for a long time and winter had come without I had even noticed it. The ground was covered with snow, everybody had thick clothes and kids were playing with snow doing snowmen or snow castles. And accidentally Hathiere bumped to me there.

The bright light made me look even worse. I was really pale, the skin under my eyes was black because of staying awake so much. My hair looked dirty, I looked like I would’ve been seriously ill. I didn’t know even myself how awful I looked that’s why I didn’t understand why Hathiere looked so shocked when he saw me.
- What’s happened to you? he asked worried.
- Nothing… I mumbled.
- Nothing? Do you even know how awful you look? Hathiere asked.
- Awful? No…I’m just a bit tired, I answered and yawned.
- A bit? It looks like you wouldn’t have slept for weeks, he sighed.
- Well…I haven’t, I confessed ashamed.
- What? Atha’n?! What’s wrong with you?
- Nothing! I just have to solve some things quickly, I tried to explain.
- I knew I should’ve ordered Inaila to look after you, Hathiere sighed. – She won’t like what I have to tell her.
- No! I shouted. – You aren’t going to tell Inaila!
- I’m afraid I need to. You’re looking so bad that somebody needs to take care of you. Obviously your dad has something more important to do because he hasn’t noticed how bad condition you are, Hathiere explained.
- Wait a minute! Do you know where Inaila is? She isn’t spending much time here and refuses to talk about it, I asked suddenly.
- Yes, I know. You know she’s my sister Nyshere’s friend. They have spent time together nowadays, Hathiere told.
- Do you know why? I asked then.
- No I don’t and don’t try to change the subject. You need to take care of yourself better. If you can’t do it by yourself I have to tell about this to Inaila or your dad.
- No, no, no, don’t tell them! I’ll take care of me better, I begged.
- When have you eaten last time? he asked.
- Erm…I guess it was dinner yesterday, I muttered.
- And it’s almost afternoon now! What the hell has come to you?! C’mon, you need to eat something and after that you’ll go to sleep. You look like you could fall asleep right away, Hathiere demanded.
After he said that I felt really sleepy. I didn’t resist when Hathiere lead me to kitchen and our cooker gave me something to eat. I don’t remember what I ate, I just wanted to go to sleep. Then Hathiere made sure I really went to my room and started to sleep.

When I woke up it was almost afternoon. I had slept the clock around. My stomach was making horrible noise. I was hungry as hell. I walked down to kitchen to ask some food to eat. Our cooker gave gladly a huge plate of warm soup for me and fresh rye bread. I ate with good appetite and I was just about to ask some more but dad stepped in and stopped me.
- You! To my office right away! he ordered and pointed at me.
He turned around immediately and vanished from my sight. I sighed and swallowed the last bit of the bread. Obviously some servant had told I was awake, he couldn’t have known that otherwise. I knew dad was mad at me but I couldn’t totally understand why. I guess I was going to get an enormous lecture soon.

I walked to dad’s office straight away. There was no point to make him angrier than he already was. I stepped in and closed the door behind me. I sat down on the chair opposite dad. I didn’t say anything, I was waiting when he would explode.
- What the heck you were trying to do? Kill yourself maybe? dad started suddenly.
- No, of course not. I just didn’t realize how bad condition I was… I tried to explain.
- I heard you were spending a lot of time in the library, dad continued. – Why?
- I was reading some old books…I answered slowly.
- What for? You haven’t been so interested in books before, dad said.
- I just wanted to solve something… I said quietly.
- Alright Atha’n. It’s enough now. I know you’re hiding something from me. And I want to know what since you’re acting so weirdly, he said strictly.
I was moving in my chair feeling awkward.
- I really can’t tell you, I said silently.
- Sorry Atha’n but you’ve only two choices. You’ll tell yourself or I’ll force you to tell the whole truth. Be happy that you can choose, dad said seriously.
I looked at him terrified.
