Alex groaned, while kissing the woman underneath him. Elle kissed him back, hooking her legs around his, pressing him tighter against her. ‘I love you Elle.. Aah..’ She smiled against his lips, and moaned. His phone was vibrating on the floor, but both didn’t hear it. ‘Te quiero Alex.. Mmm..’ She bit her lip. Alex smiled a little, and kissed her again. Again the phone vibrated, but the sound of it was muted by their screaming. Alex rolled of her, and laid down beside her. Elena’s hair stuck against her face. Both were smiling satisfied. ‘That was amazing mon cherie.’ Elena said, and kissed him. ‘I agree babe.’ He smiled, and pulled the blanket over them. He laid down behind her, and pulled her against his chest. Elena closed her eyes. ‘It has been too long ago..’ She said and sighed. Alex chuckled. ‘We haven’t had exactly time for this Elle.’ She turned around, and rested her head on her hand. ‘I know.’ Her eyes sparkled. Alex grinned, and kissed her again. They laid down, and fell asleep.

‘Damn it Gaudet!’ Caroline snapped her phone shut, and looked at the body in the chair. Bob looked at her, his face worried. ‘You ok boss?’ Carol sighed. ‘No. Not al all Bob. I will be when we finally get this guy.’ She turned around, and looked at the sky. Stars twinkled happily, the moon gave the world a mystic glow. She and Dorothy knew each other for quite some time now. Anthony had been one of her best agents, and the bond between them was close. This guy had crossed the line. Kenneth got out of the van. He told Toby and Jared to stay there, and walked her way. ‘Hello Caroline.’ She only nodded. Ken looked at her, trying to read her face. ‘Are you ok? If you want you can stay here. You’ll get a full report of the autopsy.’ Carol shook her head. ‘No. I.. I want to see it. Dorothy was my friend. I owe her this much.’ Kenneth nodded. ‘Alright. Let’s take a look then.’ And they walked to the house. Kenneth kneeled down next to the chair, and pulled a pair of latex gloves out of his pocket. ‘Single stab wound in the chest. No defensive wounds at her hands..’ He looked at Caroline. ‘Looks like she’s been stabbed by the same person..’ Carol nodded. Kenneth got up, and pulled his gloves off. ‘Where’s Alex?’ Both turned away from the body. ‘I have no idea to be frank. He won’t answer his phone.’ Ken shrugged. ‘You can’t blame him. You told him he was off the case.’ Caroline rolled her eyes. ‘That wasn’t exactly an order to stop answering his phone Weeks!’ Kenneth looked at her, his face a calm mask. ‘Caroline, are you sure you can handle this?’ Carol sighed and went with her hand over her face. Bob walked to them. ‘Boss? There’s something you should see..’ Caroline looked at him, and she and Ken followed him. Jaqueline was taking photographs of what Bob had found. ‘Chuck and Taylors, size 8.’ Jaqueline said. ‘That’s the same shoe size as at the first crime scene..’ Kenneth said quietly.

Part 20


Rick was sitting next to her bed. It had been three days now since he found her in the hall of her house. He played with the little box in his hand. Nicole was dreaming again. She mumbled in her sleep, and moved vividly. ‘No.. No, no, no!’ She gasped in pain, and began to scream. Quickly Rick got up, and sat down on her bed, pulling her close. ‘Shh.. I’m here.. Nicky, wake up.’ He shook her softly. Nicole stopped screaming, and snapped her eyes open. Tears welled up in her eyes, and she began to cry quictly in his arms. Rick rubbed her back, resting his head on her’s. ‘Will it ever stop?’ She asked no one in particular. Rick didn’t answer; He didn’t had one.. Nicole wiped her tears away. Rick kissed her on her forehead. He closed his eyes, and let his lips stay there. Nicole broke contact and looked at him. ‘I love you Rick..’ She whispered. He smiled. ‘I love you too Nicky..’ He pulled her back in a hug, and reached into his pocket. He let go of her, and went down on one knee. ‘Rick, what are you doing?’ Nicole asked. Her heart was beating faster. It hammered against her chest. The wound began to sting. Rick just smiled and showed her the little box. With a smooth movement of his left hand, he opened the lit. Nicole gasped, and swapped her hand in front of her mouth. She stared at the delicate golden ring, with an amber colored stone in it. ‘I don’t own beautiful words; I am just an ordinary man, living an ordinary life. But you, Nicole, you are everything except ordinary.. You are the love of my life, the light to my soul. I want to share my house, my heart, my passion, my love with you, for forever and a day. Nicole Éthier, will you be my wife? Will you marry me?’ Again tears welled up in her eyes. ‘You gorgeous son of a bitch.. You’re taking advantage of my weak moment.. Of course silly guy; Yes Rick, yes I do.’ She smiled. Rick shove the ring around her finger and got back on her bed. He kissed her loving. Nicole tried to hide a yawn. Rick smiled, and kicked his shoes off. He laidd down under the blanket. Nicole crawled closer to him and felt his heart beating. She closed her eyes and fell asleep again, safely in his arms. He’d protect her against the demons in her dreams..

He paced up and down the filthy basement. Two weeks. There had passed two weeks, and still the famous detective Alexander Gaudet hadn’t caught him. He was truly amazed by that. The man looked at the photos on the wall. He took a red marker and drew a line across Dorothy’s face. Next to her hung the photo of the next victim. He traced the lines of her jaw with his finger. The twinkle would be out of her green eyes soon enough. He hated it when people were happy. Someone had taken his happiness away, taken the people he loved away. He took the knife from the table, and played with it in his hands. The handle was made of leather, and decorated with a Polish inscription. ‘My father, my mother. Dead.’ He cut the photos of Dorothy and Anthony in half. ‘My niece, my sister-in-law. Tortured.’ Again two photos in half. He turned his face to the photo of Elena. She looked so happy that it was sickening. ‘And my brother, my best friend, got locked up for something he didn’t do. He took everyone away. Everyone!’ He stabbed the knife in the photo of Elena’s face. ‘You will pay Alexander Gaudet. You will regret the day you were born, regret every stupid mistake you have ever made.’ The smile on Elena’s face was deformed. He looked at the townplan on the other wall. The houses of his victims were marked with a blue marker. He’d been planning this for months if not years, and soon it would be over. ‘Then I will get my revenge, the ultimate revenge for what he did.’ He walked to the door and switched the lights off. The buzz of the strip light slowly faded. He opened the door and walked up the stairs, back into the livingroom. Suddenly the phone rang and disturbed the silence. He walked to the tiny ebony wooden table, and picked up. ‘Kazimierz speaking..’
