Tadaaa!

I switched lights on suddenly and looked at my bed where the noise came from.
Pete was stretching his arms and was rubbing his eyes looking little surprised.
- Why the hell you’re sleeping in my bed? I was demanding him silently. – Isn’t there enough space in your own one?
- I said I would come here again today and so I did. But you weren’t at home, Pete said blaming me. – I said I would wait you here and then I had obviously fallen asleep…
- You can go to sleep in your own bed now. I’m not talking about anything with you anymore today, said.
- No way, you’ll talk or you’ll cry and talk, Pete was arguing.
I shook my head determined. – You can tell to the director of the theatre that I’ll talk about this only with her, I said strictly.
Pete was glancing at me suspiciously.
- Go now to your own bed, I want to go to sleep, I was hissing quietly.
But Pete didn’t make any move to leave.
- Well? Go!
I didn’t want to raise my voice because I was afraid of mom and dad would wake up.
- Why can’t you talk about it with me? Pete asked.
- I have my own reasons for that. You should be happy that I even agree to talk with someone, I rolled my eyes.
Pete muttered something I didn’t even want to hear but at least he left away without waking the whole house.
I had talked with Vili about it and I had eventually decided I would agree that job but with some conditions. I didn’t want that my name would be published in any leaflets or anywhere. And other employees didn’t need to spread the fact I was there as a make up artist to the whole world. The only weak link was Pete here. He could blurt the fact out anytime. In fact mom was another one. I was pretty sure she couldn’t keep her mouth shut when I was doing something feminine for once. I was sure there would be battles about this in our home.
Next day the director of the theatre show called me in the middle of my work day that she would like to visit my home later that afternoon. I was a bit nervous since I didn’t have any idea what kind of person was going to talk with me.
After my work I said to my mom that the director was coming to our home. I was trying to hint with it that mom should be somewhere else then but she didn’t understand the clue, on the contrary I would say. Mom started to hassle around the kitchen and managed to prepare impressive café service just before the director came. My astonishment was pretty big when there was this rakish, big woman standing on our door. But even the woman’s size couldn’t hide the fact Pete was standing behind the woman. I let them both in, it was only a courtesy reason in Pete’s case.
- Hello! I’m Ulla. And you must be Eve, she introduced herself.
I nodded to her and squeezed her hand as a greeting. I led them to kitchen where mom was waiting with her services. Obviously she got a little shock because of Ulla’s massive size but she didn’t show it outwards. I introduced Ulla to mom at the same time she was pouring coffee to every cup. Ulla started to tell accustomed about what kind of show it was and I was surprised when she told Pete was acting there too. Somehow I had imagined him doing only some background work or something like that, I really didn’t expect he was acting there. Pete was about to choke in his laugh when he saw my amazed look. Points to him. Mom was talking and talking with Ulla, no idea how long about some so meaningless thing. I started to be annoyed little by little because of that situation. They had come here because of me, but even so Ulla was gossiping with mom about some ex-actor. When Ulla drank last bit of her coffee she finally managed to change the subject.
- So, now that all forms are over, we can finally get to the point, she said and winked her eye to me.
Obviously she had noticed how bored I had been.
- At first I would like to see how well you can do the make up. Do you have any instruments? she asked.
- I have something, but they aren’t the best shape of course, I answered.
- Well, I’m sure they’re enough. If you could take them and do a black eye to Pete for a start, Ulla asked.
I nodded and searched all the make ups Elina had left to me. There was all kind of things. I took also a box where was different kinds of facial paints. I went back with my things and pulled a chair next to Pete’s. I asked him to turn his face to me and close his eyes. There wasn’t the best lighting in the kitchen for this but I was satisfied with my results. Pete’s eye was blue enough and I had also made his other eye to look like it would have just healed. The yellowish colour was covering the lower eyelid.
- Mom, can you get a mirror? I asked.
Of course Pete wanted to see the result. When I gave the mirror to Pete he got a shock even he tried to hide that. Now it was my turn to grin happily. Points were equal now.
- This looks real as hell, Pete said and turned his face to Ulla.
She nodded too. – And even in this kind of lightning and all that. But how about a little wound on the cheek? she suggested.
I needed my facial paints now. I mixed red and brown together. I managed to make some kind of wound on Pete’s left cheek.
- You really have violent show if I need to do this kind of things.
- It’s not even…
- Don’t speak! I yelled quickly to Pete who shut his mouth immediately.
- The paint hasn’t dried yet.
I had mixed also some sand in the paint so that the wound would look like real and the sand gave a little scabby image. After a while I tried the paint carefully and I noticed it was already dry. I gave the mirror to Pete again and he was allowed to fancy my results.
- We want you, Ulla said when she saw the wound after Pete had turned his face again to her.
- We can bend the fact that we won’t publish your name in our leaflets. But of course I can’t demand any kind of professional confidentiality from our actors, Ulla said.
Mom looked both of us, one by one trying to understand what we were talking about.
- But of course our Eveliina’s name is going to be in that leaflet. Everyone should know who has done all those good make ups for the actors, mom was protesting.
- Eve, what if we went to talk about this together, all alone, Ulla suggested all of a sudden.
It was a miracle that mom didn’t start to argue with it but started to clean the kitchen while I led Ulla to the living room and pulled the door strictly shut.
- Don’t worry, I’ll take care of your mom so that she’ll understand you decision, Ulla comforted me. – I’m used to handle difficult people.
- That’s good then, I sighed. – Sometimes I don’t have any idea what I was supposed to do with her.
- I can give a couple of good tips some time, but let’s get these other things clear first, Ulla promised.
We managed to agree all the practical things. The first practice would be already tomorrow. Ulla promised to talk with my mom straight away so I fled their conversation to the terrace. I wasn’t allowed to be alone long when Pete appeared next to me face cleaned.
- You broke my great artwork, I sighed disappointed.
- I’m not really keen on scaring people I meet, Pete answered serious.
- You should’ve showed it to your mom. You could’ve tested if it went for real one, I threw.
- I know it would have gone, I was pretty scared myself when I looked at the mirror, Pete confessed. – But you can do that again, he suggested.
- I don’t want to. I’ll go upstairs, I said and got up from the chair I had been sitting.
- Wait, Pete asked and grabbed my other hand.
- Why?
- Why are you behaving so weirdly? Pete asked.
- Weirdly? How’s that? And could you let my hand go? I asked.
- First you’re twitting me, then you’re shouting to me, after that you’re acting normally and then you’re angry and the same again. Why? Pete asked and let my hand go.
- Look at the mirror, I said and marched in.
