| 37 The other day I called to Elina because I wanted to know if she had noticed anything strange in mom’s behaviour. Well, she hadn’t and I had to assure her a long time before Elina believed it. - But what if mom really forgot to tell about Susanne? Elina still tried to defend her. - You can’t forget a thing like that, I said. – And did she forget to tell about your boyfriend in the same way? - Well… It was a bit strange when she demanded that she wanted to tell you about Olli, Elina said. - Exactly! I guess it’s better for now on that you’ll tell everything straight to me. Obviously mom doesn’t want to share her information to me anymore. So, is there anything new I should know now? - Well… Olli and I are going to search for an apartment from there. There are better chances to get a traineeship place than here in Helsinki. But mom doesn’t know anything about it yet so I hope you wouldn’t tell her anything, Elina asked. - You can count on me. I don’t want to tell anything to her because she doesn’t tell anything to me either, I said. - How you can be so childish! - And what kind of person mom is then? I snorted. - Well, have you seen Pete lately? Elina changed the subject. - No I haven’t. Should I have seen him somewhere? I asked doubting. - I guess no. As he started to study here in Theatre Academy Helsinki, Elina said. - Oh, well that’s nice. Then I guess he isn’t here all the time annoying me, I said. - What kind of attitude problem you have towards him when you think all the time that Pete is teasing you? Elina asked. - So now I have an attitude problem?! Bullshit! Pete has one because he can’t leave me alone in any case! I snapped. - You two are such kids still… Elina sighed. - Kids? But Pete is only a year younger than you! - Well he still acts like a brat… - You can be so sure that I’ll tell that to Pete when I see him next time! I teased her. - You’re not going to tell it! Elina yelled. - Yes, of course! Maybe he starts to tease you instead of me… A few weeks after that phone call I came back home from my floorball practise as usual. I was breathless and all sweaty, I really hoped dad would have warmed the sauna up for me. I ran in and threw my jacket on a coat rack in the hall leaving my equipment bag in the middle of the floor. - Is the sauna already warm? I yelled at the same time. Nobody answered. This was weird. I knew they were at home. Then I noticed an extra pair of shoes on the floor. Did we have a quest? I heard some voices in the living room and I went to see who there were. Dad, mom and Timo were sitting on the sofa and opposite them was a girl. - So, is the sauna ready? I asked dad. - It is, he answered. - Great. I’ll go there then, I said and turned around to leave the room. - Eveliina, this is Susanne, our exchange student. Susanne, this is Eveliina, mom introduced us with her bad English. - Hello, I said. – And you can call me Eve, my mom isn’t used to call me that way, I continued with my fluent English. - You can call me Susie, the girl answered and smiled revealing a white tooth row. - Alright, nice to meet you, I smiled a fake smile and left quickly to sauna. Okay, maybe mom had mentioned that Susanne, Susie, whatever, would arrive today. But I couldn’t remember everything either, right? She had long brown curly hair and pretty much make up on her face, more than enough actually. And clothes had been the type of lovely pink and woolly sweater… Of course the appearance couldn’t tell everything about the person but Susie seemed to be totally different person than me. Mom already lectured me during the same evening how I should be polite to Susie as she was a quest in our house. I didn’t care what Susie thought about me, our family or Finns in general. I hadn’t invited her here. | |

| 38 Things were like I already thought. Susie was the kind of person who I just couldn’t stand. She was talking only about boys, clothes and make ups. There couldn’t be any more girlish clothes in her wardrobe than there already was. The continent was like straight from the Barbie doll’s wardrobe. On top of that she had brought her own curtains and cover for her bed so that the home sickness wouldn’t be so big. Frilly yellow curtains and same kind of covers… Besides, Susie had taken a huge pile of photos of her family, relatives and friends with her. And she had put them all around the room. She had left her boyfriend at home too but after she told about him to me she asked if there were any good looking lads in the town. She was that kind of case… I had to introduce her at school to all of my friends. It wasn’t surprising at all that all boys adored her and they were ready to help her in any case. Susie managed to become friends with Paula right away so nowadays I had to listen to their giggling at home too. In addition Susie brought some other people to our home and even I couldn’t always tell who they really were. Suddenly I noticed I was spending time together with Liisa while others were around Susie. - I just would like to get the peace back to my own room, I complained one day to Liisa. – Paula is at our house almost every day and I can’t stand that giggling and laughing anymore. - So your parents can’t do anything? Liisa asked. - Mom doesn’t want to deny anything from Susie because she’s a quest. But I’m sick and tired of that noise. And mom thinks it’s nice when there are voices in the house but I miss my own peace. - But Susie should understand that she should respect other’s opinions too when there are many people living in the same house, Liisa said. - Obviously she doesn’t need to do that because she’s the only child. So she isn’t used to share everything. I guess they have always done like she’s wanted in her home and she thinks everything is going the same way here. The most disturbing thing is that sometimes Susie has friends in her room around 9 p.m. when I’m back home from my practices. That’s the only time when I can do my homework or other school stuff. - You have to talk with her, things aren’t changing any other way, Liisa told. - I know that. I’m just thinking that mom won’t like it, I muttered. My patience got totally lost when I found an unknown boy in my room. - And what are you supposed to do here? I asked coolly. - I’m spending my time, the boy said. – There were too many people already in the other room. - Just be sure you won’t move any of your muscles before I’m back, I ordered. - Alright, I’m not busy at all. I marched angrily to mom. This annoying crap should end now. - I want you to talk Susie about this. Her friends don’t need to live here! I yelled to mom. - So, what has happened now? she asked. - An unknown boy is lying on MY bed and he’s reading a magazine there. I don’t want that my room will be filled with strange people. And if you aren’t going to do anything right now then I’ll do something! I compelled. - But I don’t get it why it bothers you so much if someone is in your room for a while? I stared at mom totally amazed. Was she a total idiot? - Would you like that there would be people you don’t know in your own room?! I have precious stuff for me in my room and I don’t want that everyone will know what I’m keeping there! It’s called a right to privacy if you have heard! I yelled. – And besides, I can’t concentrate on anything here because Susie has friends here all the time. My school suffers! Is that what you want? Are you putting a quest girl’s needs before you own daughter’s needs? I shouted straight to mom’s face. - Do you have a puberty going on for some reason? mom asked surprised. – You haven’t been that angry ever before. - Did you hear anything I just said? Either the people from the upstairs leaves or I leave. It depends on you now, I said and looked straight to mom’s eyes. | |

| 39 For once mom did something right. She asked Susie to come downstairs and asked her to send her friends away because she had to talk with her. - But I promised they could stay here, Susie said. – They won’t agree to leave yet. - Leave it to me, I said and marched upstairs. The boy was still in my room. - I guess it would be time for you to leave, I said to him. - Why? - Because you’re lying on my bed and I don’t really like it. - Oh? the boy lifted his eyes from the magazine. - So, are you going on your own or should I help you? - I would prefer to stay here. - It’s your choice of course. But remember that I gave you an opportunity, I warned him. I stepped next to the bed and took a tight hold from his T-shirt and lifted him up. Then I turned him so that he had his back against me and twisted his other arm behind his back. I heard a sound of crying escaping from his lips. - Yes, this is exactly the way they use in every TV-series. You forced me to do this, I said and pushed him to move in front of me. Susie was staring at me terrified, so did all of her friends. - I guess you aren’t coming in this room again not to mention about this house? I asked quietly but so that everyone could hear me. – Actually it would be better that you wouldn’t come even near this street or even me, I threatened. – I guess you know where the front door is? I asked and let his arm free. Even I haven’t run the stairs that quickly down than the boy ran. I doubted where Susie had found this little boy? - Is there somebody else who needs help with leaving the house? I raised my voice. There weren’t any. The house was empty really soon. I was satisfied. But the house wasn’t peaceful yet. Mom shouted and yelled out to me that I shouldn’t threaten any people in any circumstances and blah blah blah. They wouldn’t have left so quickly if I hadn’t helped a little. But now mom had to talk with Susie about this. Though it wasn’t an easy job to do. Susie couldn’t understand that she wasn’t allowed to bring friends every day to our house, not that many people they couldn’t even fit into her room. I reminded Susie that she had apparently signed a paper where they demanded her to obey the certain rules in the host family. And one rule was that friends could visit if it didn’t distract host family. Also I had to remind Susie that she was here because of our hospitality so if we couldn’t agree this thing, it would be easy to send Susie back home. Finally we agreed that Susie would inform us when her friends would come to visit our house. And if the amount of friends would be too much they could go somewhere else. And during the weekdays would be evenings when friends wasn’t allowed to come. Then Susie could take her friends in some other place. In my opinion this kind of setting the rules for almost an adult person was ridiculous. She should’ve understood these kinds of things already. But obviously it was too much for her. After this little episode Susie didn’t like me anymore that much. Maybe I looked like an unpleasant gossiper who couldn’t stand any kind of distraction. It was totally the same for me what she was thinking of me. At least I had managed to get some kind of peace in our home. | |

| 40 I was describing the happenings of that evening to Liisa at school when we were having our break together once again. I thought it was only a funny story but Liisa was horrified at how I had dared to threaten the boy and make a fun of it too. - The boy could’ve done a police report of you! - The poor thing was so scared that I’m sure he didn’t even think about that, I laughed. – Though I guess I could’ve handled the situation much wiser but I was so annoyed at that time…! - Susie is still mad at you, right? Liisa asked. - Well, yes. A little. Perhaps I should apologize for my behaviour, I thought out loud. - It would be a wise act, Liisa encouraged. - Let’s see… I mumbled. – But hey, have you noticed something between Vili and Paula? I changed the subject. - And have you noticed something then? Liisa asked surprised. - I’m not that blind either! I snarled. – So, I’m right? I wanted to be sure. - Well, they’ve spent pretty much time together. - I have to ask Vili about it, I decided. - Are you crazy? You should rather ask Paula, Liisa yelled. - No way. If I ask Paula, the answer I’ll get is so difficult that nobody understands it. I can get the truth out of Vili instead, I explained. – But I wouldn’t have been the first one to guess they would be interested in each other… Contrary to all my manners I apologized to Susie and suggested that we would start a new beginning. I guess it was a really big mistake. After that Susie counted me automatically to her friends so I couldn’t be in peace anywhere. The huge amount of friends had now changed into some people from our class. So, when Paula was at my home, Vili came there and soon I asked Liisa to come also because I wanted even one normal person to be there. Sometimes there were only girls or some kind of mixed crew. But the unknown ones seemed to disappear and many times Susie wanted to spend time only with me and get to know Finnish culture better. I had to introduce sauna for her and after that I couldn’t be there alone either. I tried to say to Susie that I liked to be there on my own but she didn’t understand my hints. I didn’t dare to say what I really thought about her anymore. I was afraid she would be offended again. Even though I guess Susie’s angry mood was much better than her friendship, at least in my point of view. I noticed I was telling about my annoyance to Tyyne. I visited her almost every weekend and did some housework for her. She could tell her neutral opinion about things and the most of all, she understood my point of view. Tyyne reminded me much, on her own way. She wanted to be alone too, loneliness didn’t bother her. It was Tyyne who had hinted that I should do something I liked with Susie. Usually Susie had got the ideas what we could do and I had followed her like a companion dog. That’s why we were going to movies to watch a film I liked. Susie could stand my taste for once, since I had had to do it many times already. We were in front of the cinema when Pete happened to be there at the same time. I had to introduce them. I felt how Susie’s essence changed and I believed Pete noticed it too. That’s why I pulled Susie quickly inside the cinema and let Pete to continue his way wherever he was going. - How do you know that handsome guy? Susie asked her eyes shining. - He’s my old childhood friend, I said shortly. - Does he have a girlfriend? - No, not that I know, I answered and waited for the worst. - You could arrange a date for us, couldn’t you? I heard Susie saying. - Listen. I have one principle: If you can’t get yourself other’s attention, then nobody can do it for you. - But… - No buts. And shut up now, the movie starts, I said roughly. I concentrated on enjoying the fantasy world which was pictured on the wall. I felt how Susie was moving on her seat anxiously. I wasn’t going to arrange any date for them. I didn’t have any company service either wasn’t going to found one. | |
