| 55 Dad and Pete managed to agree the price for the motorcycle. Now I just had to wait till Pete’s new cycle would arrive. After that I could finally have my own bike. I had already bought two cool helmets and clothes suitable for driving the motorcycle. The other day Elina and Olli made a surprise visit. Their news got at least me silent. They had decided to get married next autumn. And they had been dating only less than a year. We all were sitting around the kitchen table when Elina told the news. I was still wondering how Elina could stand that humorless man. He didn’t have any sense of humor. Or at least he hadn’t showed it to me. - Listen Eve… Elina started and looked at me thoughtfully. - No way, not in any case! I’m not going to wear a dress, I won’t be your bridesmaid or any kind of flower girl, I yelled right away. - Eveliina! Just listen to what Elina wants to say, mom started to complain. - I would have just asked if you had wanted to participate somehow in the planning of the wedding, Elina said. I shook my head. – Just do them by yourself. We’ll end up arguing about everything in the end if I’m in, I answered. Just when Elina and Olli were about to leave, my phone rang. In the middle of that I answered automatically even the number was unknown. Usually I didn’t answer if I didn’t recognize the number of the caller. - Hi! This is Pete calling, I heard a voice saying. - How the hell you got my number? I yelled. - Hi for you too, Pete muttered. – The company where you can ask all the phone numbers is pretty useful if you have heard about that… - So, did you have something important to tell? I asked impatiently. - You could get your motorcycle out of here, Pete said. - NOW? I shouted to the phone. - The sooner the better. - Listen… Could you bring it here? I can take you back to your house after that… I suggested carefully. - Alright. I’ll bring it there for you lady, Pete sighed and quit the call. Woopwoopwoop. I would finally get my own motorcycle! I rushed out where everybody else was still standing. - Pete is going to bring the motorcycle soon, I announced with high voice. - The motorcycle? Elina asked surprised. - Oh, haven’t I mentioned about it? Dad bought me the Pete’s old bike when he bought a new one, I explained smiling widely. - Wow. Well, that’s great then… Elina mumbled and looked at mom carefully. Indeed, mom didn’t like the idea at all but dad and I had stuck to our opinion. I had had to listen to comments about all the motorcycle accidents and how the car was much safer than the cycle. Elina and Olli left before Pete came. I smelled that Elina didn’t want to meet Pete but I couldn’t figure out a reason for that. Then mom left to her evening shift at work and dad and Timo disappeared somewhere. I was waiting for Pete impatiently like a child who is getting a new toy. Soon I heard the familiar noise from the end of the street and it was getting closer and closer until Pete turned to our yard. I walked and walked around the cycle without believing it was mine now. - Well? Do you regret already? Pete asked and took the helmet off his head. - NO! I just can’t believe it’s really mine now, I replied. - Take me home now, I guess you’ll get used to the idea soon, Pete answered. - You’re so busy person? I asked. - Of course. I still have to clean my own cycle. - This is pretty dirty also… - Don’t complain. You’ll get a tank full of gas for free. - I should demand a payment for the lift like you did, I said. - How come? Pete asked like he didn’t know what I was talking about. - Since you’re after the kisses from females you’re driving, I said and glared at him. Pete burst into laughter. – It happened a couple of years ago. Are you still angry because of it? - Besides, Pete added, I think that the boy at the neighbor’s garden who is staring at over the fence is waiting for that. - What are you talking about now? I asked lowering my voice. - You know what I’m talking about. Though you would make a better impress if you made the initiative, Pete was hinting. - You always get me to do bad things… I muttered and glared at him badly. Pete was only grinning and waiting for my act. - Damn. You’ll get what you want, I snarled finally. I pulled Pete’s head closer and kissed him straight to his lips. When I let him go I glanced at the neighbor’s yard. I couldn’t see any sign of Vili. Instead of that I saw how Henri, Vili’s stepbrother ran across the garden. - Damnit. You lied to me, I shouted to Pete furiously. - I didn’t, Pete argued. - But you knew very well who I thought when you mentioned the “neighbor’s boy”, I yelled. I wanted so badly to beat Pete to the ground so that he would never rise there. - But you’re shaking, Pete grinned while suppressing his laughter. - Yes, because of anger, I said and managed somehow to control myself. I put my own new helmet to my head. - Let’s go. I can’t stand you anymore. - You know, I think I know what they’re talking about in that family’s dinner table… About how Eve from the neighbor kissed an unknown guy, Pete teased. - Now shut up or you’ll walk! I threatened and started the engine of the motorcycle. I heard Pete’s laugh in my ears when I speeded up in the street. Someday I would pay all those kisses which Pete had succeeded to steal from me. | |

| I like Peteroni. It's like Pete 2.0 And well, the guy is probably some sort of looser with no sense of humour which makes me think of a broom: stiff and humourless | |

| Lol, alright. 56 When I saw Pete’s new motorcycle in the yard, all bad thoughts vanished from my head. It was so cool. When I left my cycle next to it, Pete’s bike looked so much bigger and more powerful. I walked round and round it admiring its polished sleekness. - Are you interested in test driving? Pete asked when I had drooled after his motorcycle for a while. - Yes, of course! I yelled and almost jumped up and down because of the excitement. Pete shook his head for my suppressed enthusiasm when I sat down behind him as fast as a lightning. - Where have you hidden the handles from here? I asked slightly surprised. - Exactly, they’re hidden, Pete grinned, started the motorcycle and left the yard so quickly that I just managed to grab Pete so that I wouldn’t have dropped down. I decided to tease Pete a little bit, he had done that so many times to me. It was time to pay everything back. I didn’t let Pete go but precisely took a tighter grab and twisted my arms around him. I felt how Pete got a shock when he felt the change and I couldn’t help grinning behind his back. I met Pete’s surprised look via side mirror. I blinked my eye to him and continued staring at the views and enjoying the horsepower under me while Pete was driving. I didn’t even bother to think how many of my friends saw me driving a motorcycle with a boy… Later when I was cleaning my own cycle I didn’t have a clue about the gossips behind my back. When I went to school next time, I saw how the familiar faces looked at me long whispering something at the same time. - What is bothering everyone here? I asked Liisa and sat down beside her in the corridor. - What do you mean? Liisa answered with a question. - I’ve got as many looks today as I’ve got during my entire life, I said. – So, what I’ve done now? - Well… Many people saw a guy giving a ride to you with a motorcycle at the weekend… Liisa started. - And that’s a crime then? It was Pete who offered a lift with his new cycle, I answered. I saw how Liisa’s brain worked while she received the information thinking at the same time what my revealing really meant. - And then Paula told me that she heard from Vili who heard about this from his stepbrother… He saw you kissing a boy in your yard. And somehow I would assume that it was Pete, Liisa continued. I couldn’t do anything else than laugh to Liisa’s explanation. - I wouldn’t trust that kind of information with so many middlemen but I can tell you that what Henri saw is true. The reason for that is totally different thing, I muttered angrily. I was still mad at Pete that he had cheated me. But I would pay every single happening back at him. - I don’t really understand you Eve, not at all, Liisa sighed and shook her head. - But you don’t even have to, I grinned. - By the way, when Susie is going back home? Liisa asked just when the teacher came to let us in the classroom and started it. - A couple of days after when our summer holiday starts, I answered and deepened into Finnish teacher’s lecture. Luckily there were only a couple of weeks left at school and then would start lovely freedom, at least from Susie. And I would stand this weird staring which I still got from some guys. Did they still remember the late mess which Pete had managed to cause? In addition Elina had asked me and Susie to visit her apartment in Helsinki. She would be alone the whole weekend so we could spend a girls’ weekend before Susie would go. First I had thought about going there by motorcycle but then I realized it was impossible. Susie would empty the shops so well that I couldn’t get them all back home with my cycle. So I had to ask our car for the trip. | |

| 57 We left on Friday after the school to drive to Helsinki. Mom thought we could’ve taken the train easily but dad had given the car keys to me and just told me not to involve any car crash. The weekend ended up to be a nightmare. If I had known where I was going to put my nose, I wouldn’t have wanted to go there. On Friday we had a little time to stroll at the city before Susie and Elina decided it was time to start to get ready for the bars. I thought it was a ridiculous idea, it was only little after six and bars would open their doors until ten o’clock. I would’ve wanted to stay at the city centre but Elina and Susie forced me back to Elina’s apartment. Half of the time I had to listen to Elina’s teasing about Pete, obviously Susie had told about the gossips. How could I have explained my behavior so that they had understood it? So I had to stand it biting my lip and trying not to care about it. The night was like straight from a hell in my opinion. There were clothes everywhere around the flat when these two tried to find the perfect ones for the night. And the amount of make ups and frustration when hair wasn’t like they wanted. I couldn’t do anything but stare these two hurricanes. When they had finally got everything ready in their own opinion they somehow woke up from hibernation and they became aware of the world around them. Next they realized I hadn’t done anything for my appearance. - Eve, you aren’t going looking like that, right? Elina asked tightly and glared at my clothes. - What’s wrong with these jeans and T-shirt? I asked challenging. – It’s totally the same for those drunken men what I’m wearing… - Yes, but if you had made some efforts for your looking, a guy might get interested in you, Elina tried to explain. - I don’t need any men to mess my life anymore! I yelled. – I can easily stay here if my choosing in clothes doesn’t appeal you. - No way, we agreed that we’ll stay together. But tomorrow we’re going to find some better clothes for you, Elina said. I looked at Elina and Susie’s clothes, meager tops, leggings, miniskirts, short shoulder strapless dresses (or were they shirts?). I would rather die than wear that kind of clothes. Elina introduced nearby bars to us and finally we stayed in one of them for the rest of the night. On Saturday we went shopping for the whole day and I had to buy some suspicious clothes because Elina and Susie demanded. I would want the money back from my mom, I had better things to buy than clothes I wasn’t going to use. This evening went pretty much like the previous one. Though this time I had do more makeup and do my hair. The clothes were pretty okay, the top had even shoulder straps and I had leggings under my miniskirt. We were in the same bars than last night. But suddenly Elina started to complain about a headache and bad feeling in her stomach. She hadn’t even drunk that much yet and last night’s drinks didn’t have any effect on her anymore. I suggested that we all would leave but Elina demanded us to stay, she would manage to walk to her flat. When the bar closed its doors at 4 a.m. I left to walk with Susie towards Elina’s apparment. Because of Susie’s drunkenness and her high heels we couldn’t walk really fast. Even a snail went quicker than her. I had noticed some time ago that there was a man walking behind us. And he got closer and closer all the time. The more he reached us the less I liked his appearance. Susie was keeping one of her numerous breaks leaning against a wall when the man came to us. - Do you need any help? the man asked from Susie. – I’ve a flat around the corner, we can go there to rest…and maybe do something else. - She doesn’t need your help, I said coolly to him. - And who had asked anything from you? the man snarled at me. - So, how does it feel? the man asked lustfully. Susie was staring at me frightened with her eyes wide open. - She doesn’t speak any Finnish, you should try English, I said. I was trying to estimate how powerful the man was, would I survive if I had to attack on him? He wasn’t interested in Susie anymore when he realized he couldn’t chat with her. Instead of that he moved his dirty look to me. - How about you? Should you rest your legs a little? he asked eyes shining. - No thanks, you can continue your way. We’ll survive on our own very well, I answered and pulled Susie near me. - But I can’t leave you two together in the street, the man repeated and tried to grab my arm. I avoided man’s hand easily. - I think you should leave now, I said. This man just got more excited about the resistance. This time he tried to grab Susie but I managed to keep Susie out of his hands. Susie was totally helpless she just trembled and couldn’t say or do anything. - Susie, when I order you to run, you’ll run like a mad, understood? I said tightly to her. I was sure I had to use my fists to solve the situation. I guess the man really enjoyed when he saw women in trouble. He just stared at us eyes shining lustfully. When he got closer next time trying to grab us, I pushed Susie forward and told her to run. I didn’t have time to follow how fast she was running but what I could imagine from the man’s swearing, I guess pretty fast. - Now you’ll regret this… the man was snarling angrily and attacked me. I hit him to his stomach and got him down. For once my hobby was useful. I left quickly after Susie and left the man lying on the ground. He could stand up after a while. I was more worried about Susie. | |

| 58 I reached Susie around the corner where she was desperately swaying forward. I grabbed her hand and began to pull her so that she would move faster. I wanted to get in as quickly as I could even the man couldn’t harm us anymore. When we finally got to Elina’s apartment, I noticed Susie was in a shock. I didn’t want any more surprises for this night. The rest of the night went pretty much while calming Susie. Elina woke up because of the noise when I was trying to get Susie under the covers to lie a little. - What in earth is happening here? Elina asked with a sleepy voice. I explained shortly what had happened. - Oh my God. That man could’ve done anything! Elina shouted horrified. - He was so drunk that he didn’t even give a proper opposition, I answered. In the end Susie calmed down and fell asleep so I could finally go to bed. Even though I was awake already around midday and Susie was still sleeping. In the original plan we would have gone to Linnanmäki amusement park but it looked like we had to bury the plan unless… - I could go there alone, I suggested to Elina. I was too restless to sit inside and besides, my childish mind wanted to enjoy the rides. - Aren’t you afraid of going there alone? Elina asked. I shrugged. – Not that much than before. What could happen to me in the middle of a bright daytime? - Well, okay. But call right away if something happens, Elina demanded. While I was going towards the Linnanmäki I was thinking what Elina could do via phone if something really happened… I bought a wristband and let my inner child to lead. I enjoyed every different ride there were to offer, sometimes I took the same ride many times in a row. Finally I decided to keep a break and bought a big and pink cottoncandy and sat down to eat it. - Are you alone here? I asked a voice asking beside me. I was already going to snap something about a bad line when trying to pick up a girl but when I moved my cottoncandy I noticed it was Pete who was speaking. What kind of a magnet he had when I was bumping into him everywhere? - Yes I am. So what? I answered and moved the cottoncandy back to between us. - But you aren’t supposed to come alone into amusement park. You should take a group of friends and come here together, Pete answered and moved my arm so he could see me. - Oh well… I’ve enjoyed very much even so, I said and moved my arm back to its place. - I don’t doubt that… Pete muttered. When I had finally eaten the cottoncandy, Pete was still sitting on a bench. - What are you still doing there? I snapped. - I’m waiting for you. - Why? - Elina ordered me to bring you back home safely. - Oh my… with you two, I sighed. – Then you must have heard about what happened last night. - Yes I have. And I think it would have ended much worse. And besides, Elina was sick of worrying when she couldn’t get any contact to you during the all day. Then she called me and I promised to come here to find out if you still were here, Pete explained. - Oops. I guess I forgot to put the silent profile off, I said and took the phone out of my bag. 25 missed calls, 21 from Elina and four from Pete. - I think you’re little overreacting right now. Nobody will attack me during the daytime. And besides, I can protect myself. - Nevermind, Pete sighed, but Elina is worried about you. Are you ready to leave? - No! I want still test some rides, I resisted tightly. - Which ones you still want to see? The Ferris wheel? Pete sighed. - No way, that’s a totally boring one! - Well, not for them who are afraid of high… Pete mumbled. - But hey… Wait a minute! Are you afraid of high places? When Pete didn’t answer anything, he just stared in front of him, I burst into mean laughter. - No way in hell..! You’re really afraid of high altitude! I was laughing meanly. - I didn’t say that! Pete snapped. - Alright. Then you don’t have anything against that we’ll take a little ride in Ferris wheel, I challenged him. - It’s a deal, Pete said and left to buy a ticket. - And one time is enough? Because I love to take many rides in a row, I grinned. - I’m satisfied with one ride, Pete said and marched towards the Ferris wheel. Outside it looked like Pete wasn’t afraid at all but the suggestion about a few rides in there had got Pete’s eyes to get narrowed. This was going to be fun. I could tease Pete so much during these couple of minutes. | |

| 59 Pete was sitting in a basket of the Ferris wheel quietly without moving at all. That was how I knew that he wasn’t feeling comfortable there. We were at the top of the wheel when it stopped to pick up more people in. I couldn’t help myself peeking over the rail and pointing downwards. - Pete, look how everything seems so tiny. Like that really big man is looking like a little Lego character, I told teasing Pete. I moved myself to look down on the other side of the basket. - Eve, damn you! Stay where you are, Pete snapped and still stared at the air in front of him. - What? Oh, sorry… Did I swing the basket? Well, I can go back to my place, I answered and moved back to where I had been sitting. The basket was swinging again. - Pete… You look a little pale… I was grinning. – Should I ask them to let you already out of here? - NO! I’m just fine, Pete replied. - Great. In that case you could probably look down and tell who that guy is over there. He’s been waving his hand for us every now and then, I said. - What guy and where? he asked with an awkward voice. - That one who has funny pants and a weird hat. - Damn Eve! It’s a clown who is working here, Pete snarled and glared at me badly. - Oh. I thought it was a friend of yours, I muttered but I couldn’t keep my poker face. I was laughing like a mad while the Ferris wheel was rounding and Pete was glaring at me. Obviously I learnt to play Pete’s dirty game little by little. - It would be best for you if we left right now. Otherwise I won’t be responsible for the results, Pete said, when he finally had his feet safely on the ground. - I’ll go these water rides through quickly, then we can go, I answered. - Alright. But after that I’ll carry you out if necessary, Pete threatened. I didn’t even get soaking wet there which I was complaining to Pete while returning back to Elina’s home. - Well, that problem is quickly solved, Pete said and pushed me into a fountain which we were passing. But I wasn’t any worse... Pete didn’t have any clue about that I would pull him with me into the fountain. People at the marketing place got something to see when Pete was swearing like a crazy and I was just laughing. - It’s a standoff, right? I suggested to Pete when we stood up from the fountain and I offered my hand to him. - Agreed, Pete answered and shook my hand. Some people applauded for us and obviously because of that all of a sudden Pete pulled me against him and he kissed me. After that people were yelling and whistling for us. - We didn’t talk anything about that, I said and this time it was my turn to glare at Pete. - Well, either wasn’t about that, Pete waved his hand towards the fountain. - You started this! I yelled and began to march to Elina’s apartment. Pete followed me while laughing. - What the heck has happened to you? Elina asked surprised when we entered her flat dropping water to her floor. - It was his fault! I snarled and pointed at Pete. – Ask him. I went straight away to take a shower because I doubted the water wasn’t really clean in the fountain. When I came out of the bathroom, Pete had already left, luckily. - I don’t really understand you two, Elina shook her head. - It’s a war time, I said and didn’t explain it further. Elina thought we should go through the happenings last night with Susie. So we were sitting around the kitchen table like in a true family meeting. The result was that Susie thought I had saved her life and she would be thankful for me forever. I knew that Susie could exaggerate things but this was going little too far. Everyone who was capable to listen to Susie had to hear about my heroic behavior. Susie adored me all the time which she still spent in Finland. Her behavior was annoying me and actually I would have wanted the old Susie back. It was strange that her talking about boys and makeup wouldn’t have irritated me anymore. On the contrary, my ears would have loved that. During the last week at school I accidentally bumped into Tanja, Vili’s stepmother. - Listen Eve, would you have a moment for a chat? she asked. - Well, I have, I answered little unsurely. I doubted that Tanja wanted to talk about Vili. We went to her office where my doubts became real. - I don’t want to pry about your life but I’ve got a feeling that you don’t spend that much time with Vili than before, Tanja started. - You’re right, I don’t. Vili is spending all his free time with Paula. And being the third one there isn’t really nice, I said. - Well, that’s the point… When Henri saw you with a guy and mentioned about it to us, Vili was acting weirdly after that and didn’t even want to meet Paula, Tanja told. - I can’t say anything about that, I threw up my hands. – I tried to keep contact with Vili but he had always something more important to do. So I supposed he wasn’t interested in being with me anymore. - I’ve been trying to ask about it but Vili is as silent as a wall, Tanja said. - I know, I nodded. – But Vili told me the other spring that he had a crush on me, I told awkwardly, but later he said he had got over it and soon he was dating with Paula. It may have something to do with this. - I was already doubting something like that but Vili doesn’t want to talk to anyone, Tanja admitted. - I’m sorry but I can’t help you more, I apologized and continued my way. But I couldn’t forget the conversation. Would it be possible that Vili had still a crush on me? Or was he in love with me? That was terrifying! | |

| 60 Susie was leaving in a few days back her home, thank God. But after that she managed to mess my life really well. First she talked mom into keeping a farewell party at our house. Luckily she wanted only the closest friends of her to be there. Though it meant about twenty people from our school and with a weird logic she wanted Pete to be there as well. And of course I got the honor to take the invitation to him personally. - A farewell party? Pete made an askew sound. - Yes. It wasn’t my idea. But Susie won’t be disappointed if you can’t come, I talked quickly. I hoped from all of my heart that Pete had something more important to do then. - Of course I’ll come, Pete smiled. Shit, shit, shit! I swore in my mind. Another bomb was that Susie invited me to spend the summer at her home. This was a thank for that Susie had spent an immemorial year with us. And besides, she wanted to introduce me who had saved her life to her friends. I asked mom carefully what she thought about it and she didn’t have anything against the trip. So I surprised everybody, including myself, telling that I would go to Los Angeles with Susie for the whole summer. Dad, mom and Timo fled the party to the summer cottage and they were going to come back next day. Susie had bought the food and drinks with mom. Of course we had some alcohol which we mixed with lemonade and juice. I followed that Susie made the mixture to be mild. I didn’t want to clean any vomits anywhere. That’s why I threatened Susie that she could clean them all by herself. Even our alcoholic mixture was mild and we didn’t have any stronger drinks, I noticed how Vili was already pretty much drunk. I suspected he had his own drinks with him even this kind of behavior wasn’t typical for him. - Eve… We need to talk… Vili mumbled me his eyes showing me how drunk he was. - Yes, we need. But I would recommend you sleeping in your own bed, I answered. - Nonononono, but we need to talk now, Vili repeated. - What if we talked tomorrow when you are more sober. - More sober? Am I drunk? Vili asked without believing. - Yes, you are. And it would help if you went to sleep now. - Yeah, to sleep… Vili mumbled. - If I find Paula to take you home? I suggested. - Nonononono Paula. You can take me. I sighed. Of course me. I led Vili to his home, searched his keys and took him until his own room. - Eve, I like you… - Yes, let’s talk about that tomorrow, I shushed him. When Vili’s head touched his pillow, he fell asleep immediately. I would have brought a bucket beside his bed where he could’ve vomited if necessary but I couldn’t find any. Instead I brought a glass of water to the table next to his bed. He would need that in the morning. When I returned back to our yard, I bumped into Pete. It was first proper time during the whole night. - I was already thinking where you disappeared, Pete said. - I took the neighbor to sleep his drunk away, I replied. - Isn’t that more girlfriend’s job? I shrugged. – Vili wanted that I’ll escort him… I muttered and touched my bracelet little nervously. - Oh, so you are really using this, Pete said and grabbed my wrist. - So it really was from you… Why? I asked curiously. - That’s why, Pete answered and winked. The answer didn’t satisfy me but something in Pete’s look stopped me asking more. Perhaps I didn’t even want to know. I noticed that most of the people had vanished, obviously to continue partying in bars. The rest were enjoying free foods. I shooed the last quests away. I could clean something already now so I wouldn’t need to do everything tomorrow. For my surprise Pete stayed to help me. - So you’re going to L.A. with Susie, Pete said while he collected the trash from the floor. - Yes. Who told you this time? I asked. - Your mom told my mom, Pete answered. - It’s a shame, he continued after a silent moment. - What is shame? - That you’ll leave for the whole summer, Pete clarified. I blinked my eyes surprised. Did I hallucinate? Was I drunk? Did I dream? - We could’ve had a funny summer, Pete said silently and grabbed my chin. We? A funny summer with water fights? I was sure this was a hallucination, Pete never talked like that. - I guess I got you silent this time, Pete grinned. I was still staring at him amazed. When Pete pressed his lips against mine, I finally managed to move and pushed him away. This was quickly going totally wrong way. - I can clean here myself. You can go home, I muttered and avoided Pete’s look. - The hint is understood. Have fun in USA for all of us, Pete hoped and left the building. I was so damn sure I would… I would have so much fun that I would forget Finland and Pete’s existence. Maybe changing the place would be good for me. My thoughts were rounding too restless ways already. * * * | |
