Capítulo 4


‘Mar.. Wake up..’ I turned around. ‘Basty, let me sleep for one time.. Please?’ ‘Basty?!’ I opened my eyes and looked at the person next to my bed. ‘You’re not Basty..’ ‘Who is Basty?’ Lynn asked me. I rubbed my eyes. ‘He’s my brother.. Sort of..’ ‘Oh.. That guy! Now I know who you mean.. But are you coming? There’s a lot of work to do..’ ‘Yep.. Be there in a sec.’ Lynn walked out of my room and I got out of my bed. Quick I took a jeans and a T-shirt, and putted it on after I took a shower. Cowboy hat and shoes in my hand and I walked out of my room. ‘Morning!’ I said and walked into the room. ‘Coffee?’ Lynn asked and hold a mug up. ‘Err.. No, thanks.. I’ll take some milk or juice if you don’t mind.’ I took the bottle with orange juice and poured some in a glass. Together with some toast I sat down at the table. ‘What’s that around your wrist?’ Stevie asked me while she looked at it. I swallowed the toast and replied: ‘It’s a bracelet.. My boyfriend gave it to me after our graduation, so I won’t forget about him while he’s in England and I’m here..’ Stevie smiled. ‘That’s so cute!’ she said and drank the rest of her coffee. ‘I’m going to shave those sheeps.. Kate, Tess? Can you help me?’ They nodded and walked away. Dave finished his breakfast. ‘Honey, I’m off to the city for business.. I’ll try to be home for dinner. Promised!’ He gave her a kiss and walked out of the door. ‘I need to do.. Stuff.. Bye!’ and also Kevin left. I looked at Lynn and pointed at the door. ‘What’s wrong with him?’ I asked her. Lynn shrugged. ‘I really have no idea.’ She drank her tea. ‘Good.. So what’s on today?’ ‘We need to shave the sheeps –but Stevie, Tess and Kate are already doing that, we need to bring the cows to the paddock and Harry called me early this morning.. He needs some help. Don’t ask with what, he only said that I had to send one of you..’ ‘I’ll go to Harry, if you don’t mind..’ ‘No not at all..’ she smiled. ‘Maybe Kevin can bring you, I don’t think you know the way to Killarney?’ I shook my head. ‘Good. Finish your breakfast, than I’ll ask Kevin to bring you.’ She got up and walked out of the room. Quick I finished my breakfast and walked outside while I putted the hat on my head. ‘Kevin will bring you. Come and saddle your horse.’ She walked with me to the stables. As fast as I could I saddled Mango and walked with her to Kevin. ‘Good, I’ll bring you to Killarney.’ I got up and we took off.


‘Harry has two sons: Nick and Alex. Both are taken. Tess has a relation with Nick and Stevie with Alex. Alex and Nick live on Drover’s. Harry’s farm is quite big.. Raúl is one of his employees. And there are a few more. You have Rob, Duncan and Peter. I hope you’ll survive it.. Harry can be a bully sometimes.’ He smiled. ‘I’m sure I will. Don’t worry mate.’ We arrived at Harry’s farm. Kevin didn’t misplaced the word ‘big’ in the sentence ‘His farm is quite big’.. ‘Well, good luck!’ he smiled and rode back to the farm. ‘Yeah, thanks mate..’ I got off Mango and bound her to a tree. I collected all my courage and walked to the door. Harry was sitting on a chair, drinking coffee. ‘Hello sir. I’m Maria, from Wilgul.. Lynn sent me?’ Harry putted his cup down and looked at me. ‘You must be her sister, right?’ I nodded. ‘Good. You can help Raúl.. He’s in the northern paddock.’ He gave me a description to get there and I walked back outside. Together with Mango I rode to the paddock. ‘Hola!’ Raúl looked up and waved. ‘You need some help?’ I asked and got of Mango. Raúl nodded and walked to me. ‘So Lynn sent you?’ ‘Yep.. So what are you doing?’ He began to explain it and told me what to do.


‘Ring,ring.. Ring,ring,ring..’ I got up from the ground where we were sitting to have lunch and took my phone. ‘Hello? Maria speaking..’ I looked at Raúl. ‘Hola!’ A smile appeared on my face. ‘Hola bro!’ immediately I switched from English to Spanish. ‘How’s Australia so far?’ ‘I’m here for two days! How do I have to know! Okay.. It’s nice here, but I miss Spain though..’ ‘Good that it’s nice there.. Javi, not now.. I’m on the phone! Can’t you see?’ I laughed. ‘Is Javi playing blonde again?’ Basty sighed at the other side of the phone. ‘Kinda.. Wait, he wants to speak with you.. Here ya go..’ I heard some weird sounds and than a familiar voice. ‘Heya chica! Qué tal?’ ‘Hola Javi! Yes, everything’s fine over here.. And with you?’ ‘Also. So, how’s the music over there?’ ‘Javi, I arrived yesterday.. Do you really think that I went to a disco to check the music here? The only thing I did was talk, eat, go horse-riding and than I went to bed.. I was tired as hell.’ ‘I know.. Just joking. Horse-riding eh? Do you have your own horse or..?’ ‘Yep, my own.. Her name is Mango.’ ‘Nice.. Wait, Ony wants to talk with you too.. I’ll give him the phone now..’ Again strange sounds and another familiar voice. ‘Hey! What did I hear? Your own horse?’ ‘Yep.. She’s really sweet. So are the guys on my sis’ farm.. I can get along pretty good with one of them.’ ‘Oh, good to hear.. I hope she’s kind for you during those years..’ ‘It’s a boy Ony, not a girl.. We can be friends with boys too dude..’ ‘Yeah, yeah.. Sorry.. Forgot.. Only friends?’ I heard a teasing tone in his voice while he said that. ‘Be happy that I’m at the other side of the world, otherwise you would so regret that comment mister! And yes, I’ll behave like a good girlfriend.. You know just as good as I know that I love him very much..’ ‘Sorry amiga.. I better had shut it.. Basty’s looking angry at me.. I’ll give him the phone back and run before he will hit me! Ciao!’ ‘Hey, here’s me again.. Sorry about Ony’s comment.. You know how he is sometimes..’ ‘Ah, I don’t mind.’ ‘Good.. By the way.. Mikel had called me from England that he arrived well. He really likes Southampton and I had to tell you that he loves you very much.. He had only a few mins to call me, so he couldn’t call you..’ I smiled and said: ‘Good that he likes it there.. When he calls you again, tell him that I love him too. Probably he won’t call me coz between us is a time difference of 12 houres. Maybe more..’ ‘Yeah, you’re right. Okay I’ll give him the message. Anything else?’ ‘Yeah, actually yes.. Tell mom I love her and that I miss her.. And I miss you too bro.. Lynn woke me this morning and my reaction was like: ‘Basty, let me sleep for once.. Please?’ And she was like: ’Basty?!’ And I was like: ‘You’re not Basty..’ when I opened my eyes.’ I heard him laughing. ‘That’s incredible! Serious! But I really have to hang you.. This is costing a fortune.. I’ll tell mom the message. And I miss you too.. There’s no one to wake in the morning, or to teas when she’s drooling about Mikel..’ ‘Oh! Take that back! Wait.. Can I have Javi again?’ He gave the phone to Javi. ‘Mate, listen.. Do you wanna do me a favor? Hit Basty with a pillow and say that he deserved it. Special deliver from Australia. Deal?’ ‘Okay, I will.’ I heard him grin. He gave Basty the phone. ‘Well, I’m going to hang you. Ciao sis! Love ya!’ ‘Love you too bro! Good luck with your training! Bye bye!’ and I pressed the red button. I sat back down. ‘Let me guess.. Your brother?’ ‘Yep.. And two of his friends..’ A tear rolled over my cheek. ‘I miss them a lot..’ Raúl pulled me against himself and comforted me. ‘I know.. I miss my family too.. They live in Argentina.’ I smiled and whipped my tears away. ‘Thanks Raúl..’ He smiled and got up. ‘Come.. there’s work to do, and if we won’t finish it, Harry will get angry as hell at me.. And maybe also at you..’ I took my hat and got up. ‘Let’s finish it then!’ And we walked back into the paddock.

Capítulo 5


Months past by, day by day. Each of them filled with work. It was October, and the autumn was coming closer. The temperature wasn’t very warm anymore, but it wasn’t cold either. Kevin and I became very close friends. Still I had a feeling that he liked me more than a friend, but he could hide it pretty good if it was true.

Friday night. It was snooker night in the pub. Kevin and Raúl had taught me the game. Together with Stevie we drove to the small city. Cars were parked everywhere near the small pub. The owner, Andrew, was serving behind the bar while his wife, Ceri, served the tables. Raúl locked his car and we walked inside. The good thing about going out here is that you don’t have to go all dressed up. Most of the men are wearing filthy jeans and shirts or T-shirts. Sometimes the women are a bit dressed up, but that’s quite rare. I wore a simple old blue jeans, blocked blouse and my cowboy booths -Lynn had bought them for me coz I would need them.. I liked them but didn’t see the use of it. ‘What do you wanna drink?’ Ceri was standing at our table. Raúl and Kevin both wanted a beer. So did Stevie. ‘Cola.’ Ceri smiled and walked away. The guys laughed and looked at me. ‘C’mon! I’m 18, and I don’t like alcohol that much..’ ‘Ok.. We get it.’ Kevin winked. Soon Ceri came back with the drinks and putted them on the table.


‘Mar! Let’s play snooker. I’ll kick your ass!’ Kevin laughed. ‘Na-ah mate. I’ll kick your’s!’ Raúl and Stevie were laughing about the expression on Kevin’s face. ‘Watch out, she’s dangerous with games.. I noticed last week.’ Raúl warned his friend. He looked at him. ‘So that’s why you were so pissed last week? I’ll watch out..’ Raúl made a face and we walked to the table.

After a while it seemed that Kevin should win. Raúl and Stevie came to watch the game. Also the others came and saw us standing at the table. ‘What did you say mate? She’s dangerous? Don’t think so.. Look, I’m winning!’ Raúl looked shocked at me and saw the twinkle in my eyes. He smiled and shook his head. He knew I wasn’t going to give up. It was my turn. I was one point behind him. ‘Huh? I thought I could win this game!’ Kevin was confused. ‘Mate, I told you that she’s dangerous with games..’ While laughing we walked back to the table. The others came sitting with us. After we had some drinks, we drove back to the farm.

The next morning:

I was taking a shower. I just had putted the shampoo in my hair when someone began to scream. Quick I turned the water off and wrapped a towel around me. I ran to the screaming. ‘What’s the matter?’ I ran into the room. Kevin was staring at the ceiling. Shampoo dripped of my head. ‘Sp-Sp-Spider.. Over there!’ And he pointed at the ceiling. ‘A spider?’ On the ceiling sat a spider. He wasn’t small nor big. I sighed. ‘It’s only a spider!’ ‘I know! But.. I’m kinda.. Uhmm. Scared for them..’ he blushed. I sighed again and climbed on a chair. ‘Don’t dare to look under my towel! If you do, I’ll throw the spider in your neck!’ ‘Ok! I won’t! Don’t throw that monster in my neck! I beg you!’ I smiled and mumbled: ‘Chicken..’ Quick I took the spider and came off the chair. ‘Maybe I keep him…. As a pet.’ Kevin stared at me. ‘You’re twisted.. Get the hell outta my room with that thing!’ I opened a window and let the spider go. ‘Here you go.. No spider anymore..’ ‘Thank you so much! You’re my hero! Really!’ ‘Well, this hero is going to finish her shower. I hope no one’s in the bathroom now..’ Quick I walked back and finished my shower. When I came downstairs, Kevin sat down next to me at the table. ‘How can I thank you by the way?’ I looked at him. ‘For saving me from that thing..’ ‘No problemo.. I’m glad I could save you from that tiny spider.’ The others laughed. ‘Another spider in your bedroom mate?’ Stevie asked him. Kevin nodded and blushed. ‘C’mon.. You guys know I’m afraid of them..’ ‘It’s okay.. And about how to thank me.. Let’s go for a nice ride.. I saw your motor..’ ‘Is there anything you don’t notice?’ Kevin sighed. ‘Ok,ok.. This afternoon I’ll take you for a ride on my motor. We’ll go to the ravine, ok?’ I nodded. But I didn’t knew how this could end in a complete disaster..

hahahahahahahah, spider!!! Such a coward indeeed!!!! xDDDD

Capítulo 6


I switched my booths for sneakers and had tied my hair in a ponytail. Kevin was waiting outside with the motor and gave me a bag. ‘Some food and other stuff we can need..’ I got behind him and we took off. We drove through the outback. It was beautiful to see al those animals and plants. Soon we arrived at the ravine. Kevin stopped and we walked to it. Together we began to climb to the top of the mountain. ‘Watch your step. One mistake can be fatal.. And there can be snakes here.’ Kevin warned me. Careful we climbed to the top.


‘Wow.. The view is incredible!’ I looked out over the outback. Small rivers were streaming, birds were singing, hawks were hunting. Kevin smiled and laid a blanket down on a rock. ‘Come.. I don’t know about you, but I’m starved. Let’s eat something.’ I turned around and walked back. He got some sandwiches out of the bag and gave me one of them. Also a bottle appeared together with two cups. We began to eat.

After a while of sitting there and talking we began to climb down. I heard something and turned my head. Next to me, on a big piece of stone sat a snake. Quick I climbed further, before he could hurt me. Kevin was climbing under me. I looked down and what happened next.. Kevin stepped on some small stones and they began to roll. He grabbed around him, trying to find something to hold on to. As in slow-motion he fell down into the ravine. I can’t describe the feeling I had when I saw him falling. Far away I heard him screaming. Quick I came back to earth. He landed on the ground, maybe 10 meters below me. He didn’t moved. As fast as I could I climbed down to him. ‘Kevin! Kevin!’ he didn’t react. I kept on calling him. After a while he woke up. ‘Argh! My back.. My leg.. Aaahh..’ He was about to faint. ‘No, Kevin! Stay with me mate.. Stay awake..’ I took his hand. I felt he squeezed it. That was a good sign. ‘You have to get help.. You can’t get me out of here alone..’ I looked around me. Although I knew he was right, I had to try to help him. I saw a tree. Quick I ran to it and began to pull boughs of it to make a stretcher and to stabilize his leg. I ran back and began to put the boughs so that it supported his leg. ‘I have to tie them.. But with what?’ I didn’t hesitate and took my blouse off. I wore a top under it. I ripped it in small pieces and used them to tie the boughs against his leg. I used the rest to make a stretcher and laid him on it. ‘Aaah!’ This wasn’t good at all.. ‘Easy.. I have to lay you on it.. I can’t leave you here, with al those snakes..’ Carefully I dragged him away from the mountain. I could drag him away for a couple of meters. ‘Mar, you have to drive back to the farm.. Or call an ambulance.. However get help.. You can’t drag me al the way back home.. And what about the motor?’ ‘Kevin, I only drag you away from the rocks.. If one starts to fall.. I don’t know what will happen then.. I know I can’t drag you back home.’ I sat down on the ground to recover from dragging him. I laid down on my back and closed my eyes. ‘Maria.. You have to hurry..’ I got back up and walked to the motor. ‘I’ll be right back with help. Hold on mate, hold on.’ I jumped on the motor and drove, no raced back home. ‘Lynn!’ I ran inside. ‘She’s not here.. Can I help ya?’ Charlotte said. ‘Yes.. Kevin.. He fell of the mountain in the ravine.. I could drag him out of it for a couple of meters.. We need to call an ambulance..’ Charlotte began to think. ‘No.’ ‘No?’ ‘No. We have to get him out of it on our own. The ambulance can’t come there. How did you drag him out of it?’ ‘I made a stretcher of some boughs and laid him on it..’ We ran outside to her car. Charlotte drove as fast as the car could to the ravine. I jumped out of it and ran to the place I left him. ‘There’s help mate. Hold on.. We’ll get you away from here.’ Charlotte ran to us and together we carried him to the car. ‘He has to go to the hospital.. I think his leg is broken..’ I said and opened the door of the car. We laid him on the backseat and got into the car. ‘Let’s go then! Here, call the farm. Tess has to be there too.. Tell her to call the hospital and say that we’re on our way, ok?’ I nodded and called Tess. When she picked up the phone I began to tell shortly what happened and what she had to do. I hung up and suddenly began to cry. ‘Mar, don’t cry.. It’s not-ah! Your fault..’ His voice sounded weird, but it calmed me. I looked at him via the mirror. He smiled. At least tried to. Soon we arrived at the hospital. The paramedics were waiting for us. We walked after them inside and at down on the chairs. Again I began to cry. I couldn’t help it.. Call it a mental breakdown.. Charlotte laid her arm around me. Soon the others arrived. ‘Everything allright?’ Lynn rushed to me. ‘I’m fine.. Kevin is the one who fell down..’ Tears were still rolling over my cheeks. She hugged me.

It looked like eternity before the doctor came. ‘You can visit him now.. Two persons each time..’ They decided that I could go alone first. ‘Heya..’ I sat down on the chair next to his bed. ‘Hey.. How are you?’ ‘I’m pretty fine.. Only a bit messed up..’ Again I felt those stupid tears. ‘Come here.. You need a bear hug.’ As good as it goes he hugged me. ‘Thanks again for saving me. You’re a true hero.’ He smiled and continued: ‘A hero with shampoo in her hair the first time, and dirt the second..’ I smiled through my tears. ‘Thanks Kevin.. I hope you’ll get better soon.’ I wiped my tears away. Soon I had to leave and together with Charlotte, I drove back home. Still a bit shaking on my legs I walked inside and went straight to bed. I was exhausted.

Capítulo 7


The others were busy with school. Basty with his pilot training, Ony with musicals (not that you can call that school..) and Javi with his study to become a history teacher. Ans, Hen and Sabine were back to Holland. But not for long. Basty and Javi couldn’t wait to pick Ans and Hen up from the airport.

Basty was checking his e-mail. He hadn’t been on the PC for three days. ‘Stupid theory.. Can’t wait till it’s over..’ he muttered and logged in on his e-mail account. ‘Mom! I’ve got an e-mail from Maria!’ Quick Ana walked into the livingroom. Basty opened it and began to read.

‘Hola bro and mom
(you know, it’s still weird to call you so.
And Basty don’t dare to laugh or Javi will attack you with a pillow xD)’
Basty smiled. Also Ana had to chuckle.
‘Qué tal? Everything’s okay with me. I played for hero
and saved my friend two times. At the same day..
He fell down with climbing and I saved his ass from spiders, snakes and falling stones/rocks. Australia is beautiful. You really should come here.

I was thinking about a letter first,
but then I realized that by the time you get it, I’m a granny.. xD
And a call costs me a fortune, so an e-mail is the best way.
I wanted to ask you two, to come over. To celebrate my B-day.
You can stay here. Maybe even on my room.
( And if you don’t snore, you can come and sleep in my bed Basty (Ha,, double bed) xD)’
‘I don’t do that!’ Basty looked at Ana who was laughing about it. ‘Moom!’
‘Don’t be mad bro, I love you.
So send me an e-mail back and maybe I see you in December!

Send an e-mail back and say that we probably come in December.’ ‘Okay.’ And he began to send an e-mail back while Ana walked back into the kitchen.

Soonish parte 8

Capítulo 8


Soon it was December. Ana and Basty would come over for my 19th birthday. I had cleaned my room and another bed was standing in it for Ana. Or Basty. They would come the 19th, the day before my B-day.

‘Maria! Wake up! There’s work to do!’ I stretched my arms and got out of bed. ‘Coming!’ Quick I putted my clothes on and walked downstairs. ‘Come to my party, feel my shine. Que ya no importa lo demás. Perdieno la noción del tiempo. Nadie piensa en dormir...’ While singing I walked into the kitchen. ‘Hey, B-day girl.. Tomorrow you have your party.’ Kevin said smiling. ‘I know.. But I’m just so happy that my mother and brother are coming today!’ I walked to the fridge and took some juice. ‘..Ven lánzetta commigo. Vamos a vivir. Soy un esclavo de la situación. Almas nocturnas a mi alrededor. No queda nada en el mundo real..’ I walked back to the table with a glase of juice and sat down. ‘I miss something..’ Kevin looked at me. ‘And that is?’ ‘Subtitles.. I don’t get a thing of that song except the ‘come to my party, feel my shine..’- part.’ I laughed and gave the translation of the song. ‘Miss dictionary and mister blonde, are you ready for work?’ ‘Can I finish my breakfast first Dave?’ I asked him. ‘Yeah, I wanna drink my coffee first, if you don’t mind..’ Dave nodded and walked out of the room. Kevin bent in my way. ‘How do you mean Mister Asshole..’ he whispered in my ear. ‘Uhu.. I really don’t like him that much..’ I whispered back. ‘Hè! You know what mom always said Mar!’ ‘Yeah,yeah.. No whispering in company.. Sorry, but it was kinda private.’ Quick I drank my juice and got up. ‘Good, I’ll go to work. What the hell do I do this for? You’re just another guy. OK, you’re kinda sexy. But you’re not really special. But I won’t mind If you take me home. Come on take me home!’ While singing I walked outside, ready for work.



That afternoon I came back. ‘Heya!’ Lynn said. ‘Hey.. Man, it’s warm outside..’ I sighed and sat down on a chair on the verandah. ‘Where’s Kevin?’ I took a glass and poured some of the lemonade who was standing on the table. ‘Working.. He had to help the vet Tom with the alpacas.’ ‘Okies.. And Dave?’ I sipped from the lemonade. ‘He’s to the airport to pick Ana and Basty up. They can be here in a quarter..’ ‘I’d better hurry! I need to get a shower!’ Quick I drank the drink and ran back inside. I went shopping with Kate a couple of days ago for an outfit when my family would come. A board short and purple T-shirt. And also a new pair of shoes. My clothes flew through my room and I putted my dressing gown on. Quick I took a shower and walked back, turned the radio on and putted my clothes on. ‘Hair in a ponytail.. Shoes on.. And I’m ready to go!’ I walked back downstairs. ‘Just on time! They just arrive here.’ Lynn smiled and got up. The dark blue pick-up stopped and Dave got out first. He opened the door for Ana and also Basty came out of the car. ‘Hola cariño!’ Ana smiled and walked to me. ‘Hola mom. It’s good to see you again.’ She hugged me tight. ‘Heya sis! Still drooling about my mate?’ Basty walked smiling to me. ‘I missed you too.. Good to see ya! Yes, I’m fine and you?’ I stuck my tongue out to him. ‘Hey, I’m the one who’s teasing you.. Not the other way around. Can I say that you look awesome?’ ‘Sure you can! I missed ya.’ I hugged him. ‘I missed you too Mar..’ We walked inside the house to bring their stuff upstairs. Also Kevin came back from work. ‘Good day!’ and he walked to us. ‘So, this is your brother eh? Nice to meet you mate.’ He shook Basty’s hand. ‘You must be the mate she had saved?’ Kevin nodded. ‘Yep, that’s me.. She’s a hero.’ He also shook Ana’s hand. Together we walked to my room. Kevin followed us with some of the luggage. Basty carried the rest. ‘I don’t know if you wanna sleep in the same bed as your little sister..’ I smiled teasingly at him. ‘Who cares?’ he putted the suitcases down and walked inside. ‘It’s great here. You have an awesome room sis.’ He sat down on the bed. Ana sat down on the extra bed. After they unpacked their stuff and I told some funny stories, we walked downstairs. ‘Just on time. Dinner’s almost ready. We’ll eat outside.’ Lynn smiled and walked outside. ‘Now dinner? It’s 17.30!’ Basty looked at me. ‘Yep.. We eat early here.. Not around 8.. It was quite odd in the beginning but you get used to it.’ I smiled and we walked outside.


The next morning:

‘Cumpleaños Feliz, cumpeaños Feliz, te desamos todos, cumpleaños Feliz!’ Ana and Basty stood next to my bed, singing that. ‘Buenos días!’ Basty smiled and I rubbed my eyes. Also Lynn and the others were standing in my room. ‘Now it’s cozy in here. Good morning everyone!’ I sat up and yawned. Ana sat on the edge of my bed. ‘I have a small present for you. I got this from Foster care when everything was settled. I had to give it on your 19th birthday.’ She gave me an envelope. Curious I opened it. In it was a letter. Quick I began to read it.
‘Hello dear,

I wrote this letter in the last minutes of my life. Your dad and I, we died not directly after the accident. But that’s history.

Happy birthday darling! You’re 19 now, almost a lady. I wanted to say how proud we are at you, what ever you are going to do. In this envelope you’ll find a little present for your birthday. I hope you like it.

Your dad and I, we will always keep an eye on you from heaven. I have to stop writing now, I can’t go on for long anymore. My strength is getting weaker and weaker.. We love you darling, no matter what.

It was quiet in the room. Lynn and I both had to swallow. A lonely tear rolled over my cheek. Ana wiped it away and I looked into the envelope. I saw a golden necklace. I took it out. A little child head was hanging on it. On the back stood my name, Marjolein. There was also a ring in it. ‘That’s.. Mom her wedding ring..’ Lynn nodded. I unclipped the necklace and shove the ring on it. Ana helped me to put it on my neck. ‘Thanks Ana.. It’s beautiful..’ I smiled. Also Basty sat on the edge of the bed, but at the other side. ‘I also have something for you.’ He gave me a thin package. Curious I opened it. It was a photo frame, but instead of a photo, there was a poem. ‘I wrote it myself, but I got the poem from a book..’ It was in a beautiful handwriting.

‘One night a man had a dream.
He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord.
Scenes from his life flashed across the sky
and he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand,
one belonging to him and the other to the Lord.
When the last scene of his life had flashed before him,
he recalled that at the lowest and saddest times of his life
there was only one set of footprints.
Dismayed, he asked, "Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you,
you'd walk with me all the way.
I don't understand why, when I needed you most,
you would leave me."
The Lord replied, "My precious child.
I love you and I would never leave you.
During your times of trial and suffering
when you saw only one set of footprints...
That was when I carried you.’

‘Thanks bro.. I really like it.’ I smiled. Basty gave me two other presents. ‘These two are from Javi, Ony and Mikel. I had to gave you them.’ I opened them The first one was a CD from Reik, with two letters. One from Javi and one from Ony. The other one was a card and a also a CD. On front of the card stood a penguin with balloons in his hand.
‘Hola honey,

A very big B-day kiss from England.
I miss you and I love you with whole my heart.

I hope you like this CD. I putted al sorts of songs
on it who you like a lot. I hope that when you listen to them,
you’ll think of me.

‘Romantico..’ Basty shook smiling his head. I took a pillow and hit him. ‘Hè!’ He took the other and hit me back. ‘They’re back together..’ Ana smiled and looked at us. ‘Why did you hit me?’ ‘Coz you were saying things over Mikel!’ ‘But it’s true!’ ‘I don’t give a damn bro!’ Lynn looked at us and then at Ana. ‘Are they always like this?’ ‘Yes.. At least every week.’ Kevin shrugged. ‘You can see that they love each other..’ The others smiled. Soon we ended the pillow fight. ‘I missed this..’ Basty smiled and got the feathers out of his hair. ‘Yeah, me too..’ I blew some hair out of my face. We both began to laugh. This day was one of the nicest of my life, but soon a horrible day would come, and turn my world upside down..

It had been a warm day in April. I took a shower and walked back into my bedroom. Tonight we –and with ‘we’ I mean Kevin, Raúl, Stevie, Tess and Kate(Charlotte was ill)- were going out. Not in town, but in the city. My clothes were lying on the bed: A blue blouse and a black skinny jeans. Next to the bookcase stood a pair of black heels. I was standing with my back to the door. The radio was turned on and the CD from Mikel was playing. ‘I’ll be there for you through it all, even if saving you sends me to heaven..’ Soon I heard a slight ‘ahem’. Frightened I turned around and sighed relieved. ‘Oh, it’s you.. You scared me..’ I turned back to the bed. The radio began to play the next song. ‘Home’ from Daughtry. How often I haven’t wished to be home at that moment.. I heard him walking into my room. Deep inside me I wanted him to turn around and leave. But I knew he wouldn’t. He shut the door and walked to me. He pumped the volume from the radio up. He looked at me. A weird twinkle shinned in his eyes. On his face was a dirty grin. That in combination with him walking towards me, made me afraid. Alarm bells were ringing loud in my head, but I couldn’t move an inch. ‘Dave? What’s going on?’ he didn’t said a thing, he just grinned and walked to me. Finally he spoke. ‘Don’t try to scream. Nobody will hear you..’ He laughed softly. ‘Dave? What’s going on?’ I asked again. This time more scared. No reaction.. The grin disappeared and his laughter died in the music. The only thing what was still there, was that twinkle. I’ll never forget about that twinkle. He grabbed my wrist and held it high above my head. ‘Au!’ He pushed me down on my bed, holding my arms down with his knees. He unbuttoned his jeans and took something from his back pocket. He switched his knees for his hands. ‘If you scream, I’ll hit you hard. And besides: No one will hear you screaming..’ His voice was cold and hating. His breathe burned on my skin and the words in my mind. He placed my arms so that he could held them with one hand. With the other he ripped my towel off. Again that dirty grin followed by the feeling of his knee separating my legs. I closed my eyes, afraid of what would come. I felt a sharp pain, striking through my body. Tears of fear and pain rolled over my cheeks. Dave laughed about me. It looked like an hour before he was finally done. He got off me and hit me in my face. ‘Don’t dare to tell anyone about this. If you do, I’ll tell that you wanted it. Got it?’ I nodded and swallowed. He smiled. ‘Good girl.’ I heard him walking out of my room and he closed the door. I putted my underwear on and laid down under the covers. I cried and I cried until I didn’t had a tear left. My eyes were sticky of the tears. They had left marks on my cheeks. I took a big T-shirt and putted it on. Soon I heard some one knocking on the door. Quick I wiped my tears away. ‘Yes?’ My voice was weak and trembled a bit. The door opened and Lynn walked in. ‘Are you coming for dinner?’ ‘No.. I don’t feel so well.. If you don’t mind I stay here..’ ‘Okay. I’ll let one of the others bring you some tea, ok?’ I nodded. Lynn smiled and walked out of the room. I sighed and turned the radio back on.

Won’t someone come take me home..’ Again someone knocked on my door. ‘Yes?’ Kevin walked inside with a cup of tea. ‘Hey, Lynn told us that you didn’t feel so well.. Here’s some tea.’ He putted the cup down on the bedside table. ‘Are you sure that there’s nothing else?’ He looked at me with his friendly brown eyes. ‘Yes, I’m sure.. I don’t feel well.. That’s all.. Maybe some sleep would.. Would do me some.. Some good..’ Again I began to cry. Kevin sat down next to me on my bed and pulled me against himself. ‘Ssshh.. It’s okay..’ I laid my head against his chest and cried. I couldn’t stop. He caressed my back and hair. Finally I calmed down and he let me go. ‘Now, tell me. What’s really bothering you?’ I took the ring from my mother in my hand and sighed deep. ‘He.. He raped me.. He just came in and shut the door.. I couldn’t do a single thing.. I feel so dirty..’ Kevin looked at me. ‘Who did that Mar?’ I didn’t answered. ‘Who did this to you Maria?’ His voice was calm but still forcing. ‘Dave..’ I whispered. ‘WHAAT?!’ ‘Dave.. he did it.. And if I dared to tell anyone he would say that I wanted it, so that no one would believe me..’ Tears were still rolling over my cheeks. ‘That piece of.. We need to get you out of here.. Do you mind if I tell Raúl? Maybe he can help us.. Do you know somewhere you can go to?’ I nodded. ‘School settled a place in Miami for me, where I could stay during the study.. Maybe I could go earlier.. I have a phone number of the woman..’ ‘Good.. I’ll call Raúl, and we’ll think about a way to get you outta here. But you’re just going with us tonight. You can’t stay here al night. Especially not with that creep, okay?’ I nodded again. ‘Good, take another shower and put your clothes on. I’ll see you in 45 minutes.’ He gave me a big bear hug and left. Again I took a shower, turned some happy songs on and tried to forget about it for a while. Quick I drank the tea before it would be cold, putted my clothes on, did my hair and make-up and walked downstairs. With a self-confidence look in my eyes I walked into the livingroom. ‘I thought that you were staying there al night?’ ‘I told her to come with us.. Maybe she’d feel better after some fresh air.’ Kevin winked to me. ‘Okay, have fun!’ And she turned her head back to the TV. Dave didn’t even looked at me and I ignored him. ‘Okay, are you ready?’ Kevin took the car keys and we walked outside, ready for some fun in town. Ready to forget this. At least for a while.
